    Question cumberland river concern

i just got back from cumberland river fishing for a week and was 1 of worst trips in years .While i planned my trip way ahead of time and got my hopes up that it was going to be a good one from the reports that i haad read .Well it was those that posted the reports r wrong and i think are guides that want your bizz .I experienced the truth and the fishing was spotty and vewry slow even though i did catch fish nothing of the quality that i am use to .THis be because of the temp of the river and most of the aquadic vegitation has but disappeared and if we dont get it back we going to lose a very good river . I caught 7 catfish that are rare to catch seen big tripers and lots of carp very few trout and not one walleye or sauger . i hope they can save this great fishing river and get it back to normal .IF you have any thing to add feeel free to add and respond

You expect to catch fish all the time? Cumberland fishing's is a bit down right now yet there are times you'll have days like that. I've seen it come and go even before repair work began. The mid-90's it was tough. If you caught fish all the time they'd call it catching instead of fishing. Read that some where?

Really? Most of the reports I read were from people I know and I saw their photos. A few guys from our fly fishing club went down there and did really well.

Remember, the reports said they were in there, they didn't say you could catch them!

    Re: cumberland river concern

Was down there just below Wolf Creek Dam Friday night through Sunday afternoon. I caught several trout on small cranks and my buddy did real well flyfishing. We caught rainbows, browns, and brook trout. No trophies but several very nice fish. The brown trout population seems to have reached an all time high from what we usually catch. Also saw lots of people catching lots of stocker rainbows. I would say the fishing was average from the 30 or so times I have fished the river over the past 5 years. Beautiful scenery though and we had a blast.

The river hasn't fished as good since the work on the dam started, but I'll have to say it fished pretty good two weeks ago. The difference this year over this time the last year has been the 58 degree water temps. With the lake stabilizing better this summer and the sluice gates open, I caught all 3 species of trout and a white bass on a fly rod. I saw a lot of fish subsurface, but very few rising. In addition to a 17 in brown, my buddy also caught a walleye and largemouth all on the fly. The fish were very active and I probably missed more fish than I caught. Some days however, the fish can just shutdown.

As long as they are working on the dam there's going to be a risk to the fishery in the lake and the river pure and simple. I don't see this project ending any time soon. Despite the projected completion date, I have a feeling we'll be talking about this 10 years from now. When does the govt ever complete anything on time?

3 Gates open at Wolf Creek
With the recent rain (~4 inches), Wolf Creek is releasing water from LC. Three gates open with a resulting flow of 6,300 cfs. Good news is this is putting a great deal of oxygen in the the Cumberland River water, as well as lowering the water temperature.

Thanks to the TVA, COE, and KDFWR for their joint management of the Cumberland River and trout program. Did I say thanks? Thanks..

Yeah I would have to disagree Chris. I've fished pretty much every other weekend this summer and the CR has fished better this year than past. Of course that could be due to me learning the river again. It doesn't "fish" like it did because the habitat has changed. Just like any other fishing venue, we have to change what we do to be successful.

When all of this started I told myself I wasn't going to be one of the ones whining about it and blame the dam work; I would adapt. The fish are still there, just in different areas and keying on different presentations.
