I never even thought about the fact that it was Hard Rock and not just Rock. I guess that is why the Beatles were not on the list.

I can not believe Stranglehold by Ted Nugent didn't even make the list....it should be up in the top 20.

Re: VH1 Greatest Rock Songs of ALL TIME

What was "Hard Rock" in the 70's may not be comparable to what was "Hard Rock" in the 80's, or the 90's, or today....but even still, it's an ALL TIME list...

    So...

HOW, HOW, HOW.....could Foghat / I Just Wanna Make Love to You not be in the top 100 Hard Rock Songs? Highway to Hell or Thunderstruck by AC/DC doesn't make it, but some of these other turds do? And can I get a little Ram Jam Band / Black Betty for God's sake? Maybe even some Fire Woman, by The Cult? Not 1 tune from STYX, like maybe Renegade or Blue Collar Man? If Journey's Any Way You Want It is one of the Top 100 Hard Rock Songs of All Time, then Queen's Fat Bottom Girls not being on the list is ludicrous. I was going to kick my desk over and go murder a midget if ZZ Top didn't make the list....thankfully they did, but only once, and with "Tush", which is a great song, but not their best in my opinion. The fact that LaGrange, Just Got Paid, Sharp Dressed Man, or Cheap Sunglasses from the bearded boys is not on the list is a travesty of epic proportions. Boston, anyone?

I call shenanigans. I may not be able to sleep tonight after reading this.

the 60s and 70s were rock n roll, then it progressed to clamor and din. NOISE does not equate talent.

True, the Beatles and the Stones aren't really what you'd call "hard rock" bands, but neither are some of the other bands with songs on the list, like Jethro Tull, Cream, or The Kinks. I mean, think about "Free Bird," then think about the Beatles' "Helter Skelter." You tell me, which one of those two songs fits better into the "hard rock" genre? I'm not saying "Free Bird" isn't a great song, and if it's your favorite song of all time, more power to ya, I personally heard it more times than I needed to back in the 70's. But whatever your opinion of the song, you gotta agree it's "country rock," or even "rock 'n' roll," but "hard rock??" The freakin' song starts off as a BALLAD. I agree with you, Elnut, the list is totally bogus. It was a vote at VH1's web site, so I'll bet some songs made the list more on the merits of their associated videos than the songs themselves.

Re: VH1 Greatest Rock Songs of ALL TIME

I havwe been playing music almost 30 yrs, I have played most style, but consider myself a hard rock/metal/progressive metal bassist. To me, and imo, hard rock groups would be Thin Lizzy, Foghat, ACDC, Guns/Roses, and groups similar, Skynard is southern rock, and the define southern rock, dont know how they made it in hard rock genre/poll? Jethro Tull, they were hard rock with a twist, Auqalung, that song rocks, to me it is all rock. Yes Helter Skelter is harder than free bird, it freaking jams, the guitar sound on that song, is remakable, like I said before if it were not for the Beatles we would not have hard rock, also the Stones they are more bluesy not hard rock just rock.I glad to see there are metal heads here on this board.
