I keep my fish in a livewell and when I catch a bigger one I let the smallest one go. On the otherhand if I am keeping fish in a cooler then those are for keeping. Now fishing for a species once you have your limit on ice might be a fine line. As long as you let them go I don't see a problem. Afterall, who's to say you aren't fishing for a different species.
I never thought about the livewell scenario. I always put my keeper Stripers straight on ice in the cooler. I would think having 2 per person in the boat in the cooler and still fishing for them would be a violation. I am almost certain that Guides will end the trip once the limit has been reached because it is a violation or it could be a moral issue because most of the year Stripers will die if they are released after being caught. Not so much when the water temps are cooler and I may be completely off base on what I said. Maybe somebody will chime in that knows for sure.
