My wife also worked for a few years and when she passed at the age of 39 I applied for SS for my 12 year old daughter. I do was denied because she was one quarter short of being eligible. I've been paying in to it since I was 15 and I'm 52 now. I'm supposed to be able to collect it when I turn 66 for full benefits. I was told that if you collect it at 65 you lose 25%. 14 more years seems like a long time. I'm just thankful that I'm not relying on it because it may not be there.
