You should be o-k, most of the time, it is after thanks giving before it gets to winter pool. That time of the year, fish the mouths of creeks, and coves with alot of rock on them, use either craws, tubes, or brush hogs, also use the wind, fish the bank it is blowing on.... Tr
Thanks, Big T
I've got a tournament there the 24 and 25 of October. So I hope it's not too low by then. We're going out at Wax. So maybe the fish really be turned on by then too.
I live about 3 miles from the dam, if you or "skipjack" want, hollar at me here, and if i've not fished any, i'll run down and check, see about how low it is, and how much they are pulling it. It's really just going to depend on how much rain we get. I've got a night tourn the next 2 fri. Nights at wax, but that won't help you all that much. I do know last fri. The water temp was 72... Tr
Guys, the lake doesn't drop to a point that makes it unfishable even in the dead of Winter. Typical schedule is that they drop it approx 2 feet below Summer pool from 9/15-10/15. Then, on 10/15, they start pulling quite a bit more water, but it still takes nearly a month and a half for it drop the remaining 23 feet to Winter pool (usually it falls around 6 inches a day). As Big T said, it is usually Thanksgiving before it's all the way down that far. If you look at the chart on corps site at the following link: http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/wc/res...plots/nrr.html
you will see the Green line is the target pool elevation and the Black line is actualhe target line doesn't hit 490 winter pool until Dec 1st. Last year, the actual at Dec 1 was several feet above target and actually stayed a couple feet above it throughout the entire winter. Point is, there will be plenty of water to fish through October and into early Nov (and still fishable after that, you just have more limited launch options). On Nov 1, the target is approximately 507 or so according to the graph, which is only 8 feet below Summer pool. When they pull harder starting on 10/15, the crawfish really start moving and the orange belly crankbait bite gets really good. Good luck
FYI, I fish Nolin year round. Most of your Corps run ramps function year round, the smaller ones do not. You really need a keelguard or a tin boat to launch at winter pool because you will probably have to beach the boat on a ramp unless someone goes with you. I fish a lot by myself so I just beach it on the ramp. My logic is, less water + same # of fish = easier to catch.
Thanks for the info guys. We had our club classic there last year too. Caught well over 100 fish but only 6 keepers. got most of them on a buzzbait and a devil horse. Hopefully this year we can find more keepers. Spent most of our time just past the bridge at Wax. Would it be best to go up river or down toward the ****? Tight lines and big smiles!!
