    Re: Ohio River Bridge...Loving It!

So why isn't a private concern building a bridge??? Thats not the way it works in america anymore.Companys want tax payer incentives first. Make it very easy for them, big tax write offs, low intrest gov loans, and then they will start, and blow the "free enterprise" horn. The crowding issue can be easily solved, change work starting times, but that would be "big gov" interfearnce.Wait till this winter!!

That is the single most asinine thing I've heard in a LONG time on this site.

We PAY motor fuel taxes for just this type of crap.

So lets get this straight.......forget the east end bridge, which was PROMISED to the ford plants 20 years ago.......yea those very plants that THREATENED to leave.....yea those plants.

Just how much interstate commerce flowing into and out of KY would happen if the 64 corridor didn't exist. NONE...........NOT A SINGLE BIT.......NADA.

Have you ever looked at the east/west corridors across our country. If you haven't noticed 64 is the only one.

Have you ever looked at google maps and realized that the BRIDGE on the east end is supposed to be there.

Or how about this nice tidbit of info.......the EAST end bridge is the ONLY piece of the interstate project under Eisenhower that has NOT be built. The only reason....******** KY politics.

If I lived in KY, I'd be **** embarrassed by all the corruption in the system. KY has to be the most corrupt, most unethical state in the country.

Yea.......I believe in capitalism, but I also believe the EAST end bridge should have been built with taxpayer dollars 20 years ago..at 100 or 200 million dollars, not the 2.5 BILLION it will cost today.......

    Later,

    Geo

That's state money........the state is not the best at managing it's own money.

The KY DOT was on the verge of collapse until the stimulus money came along. The stimulus money received basically pulled them out of the hole and took care of some of their negative balance. Most of the money collected from the gas tax goes to pay for stuff already built, so there is no getting ahead. It's like having a high balance on a credit card and only taking in enough in taxes to make the minimum payment........hence the need for outside funding for these bridges, such as tolls.

No .184 is a federal tax and it is returned to states however they use this to force states to comply with speed limits and other federal regulations or they will with hold federal road tax. Kentucky has a state tax at.278 which makes it 21st in ranking

You forgot about Illinois...I would rank it at the top.....

I blame the large majority of liberals in Louisville for the transportation issues we have. They do not want "progress" and try to fight it at all costs......look up 86/64 and see if that doesn't prove my point....and River Fields while you're at it....as long as the city keeps putting liberals in office who will take up their fight, it's going to be a continuous struggle.

If you look to the western part of the state, you'll see some major construction going on with 68/80 and two new large bridges going in over KY and Barkley Lake. The difference there is that the people there WANT the construction going on with little opposition from local special interest groups.

The special interest groups do more than you could ever imagine to hinder progress on projects.

What was completed under Eisenhower wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of being built in today's society....it's not so much politics as it is that the country itself has changed. Everyone used to embrace a "moving forward" mentality and took part in trying to shape our country for a better tomorrow and better way of life for our children. Now there is a large majority of people that make it their life's work to prevent such things from happening, and as their numbers grow, so do our frustrations. The more urbanized the area, the more of these people you will find....and the stronger their influence.

Correct. I didn't want to get into that much detail, but since you brought it up, this is why you see some absolutely ridiculous and overly designed bridges in areas that might only have a couple cars a day on it.

Geo I'm calling you out; do not take the title most corrupt from Illinois/Louisiana. Kentucky is not even in our league, you are astute enough politically to know this.

    How dare you.

Here's another good link with concept drawings of the new bridges.

You don't hear much about this project in the news. I think it's a pretty big deal. The estimated cost totals about $350 million.

Preliminary work on the Kentucky Lake bridge is currently underway. There are barges in place doing work in relation to the piers. I can't tell if they are doing borings for design or if they are doing something else instead.

I haven't been over to the Barkley Lake Bridge lately, so I'm not sure of it's status at this time.
