Haven't been on Fishtrap in a while, about a year i think. Last time I was there I did catch some fish, we camped & catfished at night & bass fished the next morning. Nothing great on either, 4 keeper bass that morning. But, a friend of mine was down there in July & all he told me about was the trash. I hate hearing that, but unfortunately Fishtrap has gotten this reputation. When I was there last year we didn't see a lot, but he said the lake was covered up back in July.
So, sorry no up-to-date fishing info, but if you go I'd be interested to hear how the lake looks & fishes...
Good Luck
Been considering taking a trip out there myself as my son lives in the Pikeville area. He went to visit said lake and those where his same comments about the trash. Never fished it just read where it's deep.
Thats what that lake has been for years. Trashtrap was the name we called it. Nice crappie to be caught in there. We got on the clorox bottle mat pattern when I used to fish it.
I fish the ole Trap every now and then. Last few times I have gone the water has been fairly clear and very little trash. The trash really becomes a problem during large rain events particularly in the spring. The lake really isn't very deep at all. close to **** at the deepest its 84 feet. the average depth is close to 30'. The fishing has improved over the last 2 years as well. I know Hybrids are the main attraction and are very underfished, it has an excellent rating from the KDFW. There are also decent numbers of both smallmouth and largemouth. Some of the better creeks to fish are Jonican, Grapevine, and Hurricane creek. I always do well on Crankbaits and jigs, and if the bite is slow a shakyhead will get you bit. I don't fish for the hybrids so I'm not sure about what to use for them. Be careful how far you run upstream it gets shallow pretty quick.
Most of my Family still live in the Grapevine area of Phyllis Ky which is about 1 mile to the camping area and boat ramp, which you may not be able to use right now because they started dropping the water Labor Day and closed the camp ground the same day, The only Boat Ramp open will probably be the one close to the Dam Despite being trash filled which it is, My Cousin calls it (Trash Trap lake) the Hybid fishing there is great, actually been told this lake may be the best Hybid bass lake in KY right now, and I can tell you the Crappie are hitting great right now. this is a Beautiful lake and you should do good, Small tip My cousin uses Chicken Liver and does great with the Hybrids. DON'T hang to much of the Rod over or you will loose it and set the drag real light the Hybrids HIT LIKE A SHARK I think he hangs it off the back of the Boat while casting Good Luck wish I could go with ya![]()
Thanks for all the info. If this is the reputation of the lake do not know if I want to make the drive. Just looking to try some diff. lakes in eastern and southeastern region. Again thanks for info it has probably saved me a wasted trip. Guess I will just hit barren up or some where that I know has a good population of fish.
