How is the bite at cave run?
I don't really have the equipment for musky but I bet that is a lot of fun.
Yeah its a blast, but you def need the right equipment, i.e. Shimano Compre musky rod, 65lb braid, 200lb flurocarbon leader, and a big ole net!! and some big Grimm Reaper spinnerbaits!! The bass fishing should be getting better. I was there a couple weekends ago and there are alot of baitfish in almost all of the coves but never did get on anything consistent. should be anytime now though that they will be heading shallow. The water temps as of this past weekend are 67-70 depending on where you are. So the topwater bite and the crankbait bite should start picking up. If I were going I would hit the Zilpo Flats with topwater early and then concentrate on the back 3/4 of the creeks/coves. If you aren't catching them on top or on cranks then slow it down and fish the chunk rock banks and points with a shaky head or a jig.
Where abouts is good for musky in you opinion?
What made you decide to go muskie fishing, Moon?
Well we are going to bass fish mostly and figured since we are there I will try my hand at one of those beast! Not expecting to catch one just more in hopes, I rigged up a rod and reel last night with some braid and steel leader and my only musky bait that I bought for big bass at Guntersville. It's a huge jointed shad rap that looks like a trout. Plus the bass bite has been very slow for me for it seems like eternity and I do not want to travel very far, we will be going to ky and Barkley in a couple of weeks when it gets a little better, just trying to stay close to Lexington.
The Zilpo Flats always hold fish both bass and musky, just get on the weed edges and position your boat in about 7-10 feet and cast up into 3-4 feet where the weeds are, shouldn't be too hard to figure out just look at the pattern of the bouy's and they make a horseshoe shape and thats marks the edge. Big Cave Run, little Cave Run Creek, Scotts Creek, Clay lick (the hollow by the ramp), Warrix, and Beaver Creek and all the hollows in it should all be holding musky right now I would reccomend throwing a bladed bait of some kind, a bucktail or a 1oz or bigger spinnerbait. The weed growth is down this year becuase of the spring flood but there is grass in places and when you find it, it should be holding muskies. Check out Justin Mullin's report.
