Anyone use Shad to catch Crappie?

A Guy was using Shad he had cast netted last Sunday at East fork Lake Ohio
to catch Crappie, I had never heard of it before and these shad were about 3 inches long, They looked to big for Crappie to me but he said he had caught 9 on that one point with them,
He caught them right there where he was fishing.
Must be Millions in the lake.
I researched this online a little and seems a lot of people use them, the thing that stands out is that these shad usually catch bigger Crappie because of the size at least from what I read online, anyone else ever use them ? Pros or Cons

I've never done it but it makes sense to me. Just need to be able to catch the right size shad which would be tied to the hatches.

I have used the smaller shad to catch Crappie One big con is that fact that they are verry hard to keep alive. I usually use them at night under lights. when catching the smallers ones you have to almost take them from the net directly to the hook. They have seemed to work better for me at night.

I fish with live shad sometimes, the way I do it, and they stay active for about 2 hours, take a 5 gallon bucket, dip it in the lake and fill to about 2/3 take a little bubble maker that runs off 2 d-size batteries. cost about 8 dollars at the { CHINA STORE } better known as wal-mart, clip it on the side of bucket, drop the tube into water and turn it on, throw casting net in lake catch shad and empty into bucket. in about 2 hours empty those and do it all over again. works for me.

have caught some very nice crappie on them we get shad under the lights at nite and then take a small silver buddy and jigup thru the shad to snag them then drop back under the shad never touching the shad is the key to keeping them alive

Okay, just wondering, has anybody ever used small crappie to catch Striper?

Jig thru shad, catch shad, drop back to get the crappie, then drop the crappie down 40 feet to get the Striper. ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Not sure you can legally do that as croppie is a controlled species.

It sounds like a great idea to use small shad as bait. As long as you can keep them for a few hours!!!!

the key to keeping the sgad alive is a round bait tank and good air circulation. if they can they will back into a corner and die within 5-10 minutes.

in the winter the little creek that runs down the side of the upper dam at Mcalpine is full of little 2-3 inch shad. i use a large dipnet and with 2-3 scoops i got enough bait to fish with all day. im sure if you were using these to fish for crappie it would work,
