Crappie Doe Run Lake Kenton County KY.

Tried a little lake near my house yesterday for some Crappie, Doe Run Lake
( Trolling Motor Only ), in Kenton County.
No size limit on Crappie in this lake, and I know why, caught maybe 20 Crappie on Minnows, both Straight Line and with Floaters, NONE over 5 inches long
These were so small they could be used for bait themselves.
But Very nice day to fish not work...... Dave

Where did you fish for the crappie ? I heard of some nice crappie being caught near the overflow in the lake. All those small crappie had to come from somewhere. I am sure there are some nice keeper in there. Maybe you need to use some big minnows.

There is a small lake close to where I live also and it too is chocked full of 5 and 6 inch crappie... Carnico lake is about 14 miles from my house and I get to fish it once or twice a week, 9 inch crappie are tough to come by but on occasion I will catch 5 or 6, now and then I have caught 12 inch plus crappie there... The plus side is it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to spend a few hours on the lake relaxing and there is something to be said about catching 100 plus numbers quite often as I am fortunate enough to do... If it is fairly close to you, invest some time into learning the lake's ins and outs with a depth finder and take what it gives you when you get to fish it, There isn't many bad days on the water and if it gives you small fish just enjoy the day.

Don't know if you eat crappie or not but a 6 inch fish taste the same as a bigger one and they even clean the same way, you just have a smaller piece of fish after you fillet it, the down side is you have to clean more fish to have the same amount, when you take them out of the deep fry they make as good a looking plate of fish as the 14 inch crappie we would rather catch.

I was told the same thing about the concrete overflow, The lady at Latonia Bait and tackle told me about it, I did try all 4 sides different depths and not a bite,Large and Med. Minnows I haven't given up, and it was fun. Thanks Dave

I buy minnows at the bait store in latonia when I can't seine them. I always plan on spending about 20 minutes talking to the owner. She has all the info you need to find out where they are biting and what on. I might have to give Doe run a try. It is good to keep as many undersize crappie that is legal just to thin them out. When fillet they do make a nice fish chip when fried in cornmeal.

Is that lake worth trying to fish from the shore? Anyone know any good creek spots around NKY? I live off 17

I have fished out of a small boat for Largemouth and have done fairly well over the past few years. I have caught quite a few in the 3-5lb range.

I fish by that Church all the time in the creek. I have the white maxima that is down there sometimes. If you are ever heading to Doe and have an empty seat, let me know!
