    Hawaii and Pearl Harbor

Just returned from a nice vacation on Oahu where Pearl Harbor is located. We had decided months ago while planning this to take the tour of the USS Arizona memorial and it was quite touching. The film you watch before taking the boat ride was historic, touching and educational. Many folks wept Including myself at the terrible carnage on that day and of the subsequent war.

I found it ironic of how many Japanese folks were in the tour that were also touched including my mom. It hit home more than anything that I have read or heard that the citizens of countries don't start wars.... It's the leaders of their country that make that decision for them. We all live with their decisions.

We also went aboard the USS Bowfin which was a submarine that was deadly to the enemy during the war. To walk in and on this sub just blew my mind. I'm an average sized man and I felt like a giant in some of those tight spaces. Its hard to imagine running around that thing with other crew members.

I wish I had another week in Hawaii to see more of the history and beauty of the islands. We spent 7 days and just scratched the surface on things to see.

I totally agree Don that Pearl Harbour was an amazing tour and I cried during the movie also. It was touching to still see that ship underwater in its grave. To me Hawaii is an amazing place to holiday and is my favourite place to go.

    Margie,
Going back to Honolulu has been a dream of mine for years. My dad being a Navy man meant we travelled a lot. I just happened to be born in Honolulu and always wanted to see my birthplace as an adult. We snorkeled and paddle boarded while there and I saw some of the most beautiful sights in my life. Also hiked diamond head and swam on some other beaches. I found out later on that grabbing a sea turtle and having it pull me in the water was illegal! Lol it was a fun little ride. I read about it later at Hanauma Bay Park which was the most amazing place I have ever been.

Wow so you were born there. You are very lucky. What a beautiful place to be. I love sea turtles too. I love the ocean and climate is so perfect there. Never overly hot with the breeze off the ocean. Glad you were able to return. We also hiked the diamond head and rented a car and drove around. We also hit 2 other islands and rented cars and drove around and met real Hawaiins and that was cool. Kaiwi is really beautiful. It was all beautiful and so relaxing. I so want to go again. It is truly the only place I have been where I felt totally relaxed and content.

Congrats on your trip. Hawaiian Islands are beautiful. I have been to Pearl Harbor twice once in 2001 and this past year. Kauai was my favorite place I have ever been. Paradice in my opion. So many beautiful places the waterfalls are unreal. They even have smallmouth and trout in some streams.

We drove around as well but driving in waikiki sukked! Walking was the way to go there. Between snorkling, swimming, hiking and walking the beaches I only gained 5 lbs!! I ate like a food champion while I was there!!!
I woke up about 4:30 every morning just because of my internal clock being off. I would walk down to the beach and watch the sun rise over the diamond head area and listen to the waves. It felt wonderful.

Did you take a tour boat from one of the other islands? We talked to a couple there at the hotel about that and they mentioned that was the only way?
Man I want to go back in a bad way. Maybe next year!

Wow, sounds like you had a blast. The wife wants to go there for our upcoming 20th anniversary....I'd love to go, but the long plane ride will just kill my back, thinking of setting in a plane seat for so long...The trip to Vegas was so bad, it's the reason we don't go hardly anywhere anymore....If I could lie down for periods of time while in flight, now that would help out a great deal.

But we'll see how things go, maybe we might be able to go somehow..... Visiting Pearl Harbor will be on my lists of things to do for sure while there......

Take a boat. Will naturally take longer but I bet it'd be a fun ride. Maybe the captain would let you troll a little.
