For example, look at Rolandon 'Deuce' Finch, rushed for something like 240 yards for Boston College last week. You can't get into a school like that without being committed to your school work, not just football. When his career is over, he probably won't be in the NFL, but will have a first rate education from a great school. Just my 2 cents.
There is some validity to your argument, but I can tell you this much because I lived it. Freshman football coaches from St. X came to Bullitt County and watched a bunch of kids play football. After the games they talked to certain kids and their parents about playing football at St. X. I was one of those parents. They even gave us a web site address to fill out financial aid papers through the Archdiocese of Louisville to see if we qualified for tuition assitance.

They never showed up at the academic team meets in Bullitt County, only football. If that is not recruiting I don't know what is. I have seen this for a number of years and I used to cover high school sports for a couple of different newspapers including the Courier-Journal and it was no secret among the sports media or coaches that they recruit.

Edited to add that they are not the best schools around Louisville, that would be Manual which is the highest rated school in Kentucky!
