    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

I was in Nassua and this kid about 12 comes up to me at the warf. I give him a $1.00. He dives from the warf and is gone for about 5 min +/- and I am starting to worry. He finnally comes up and climbs the ladder with a huge (5lb?) conch shell and says "for your wife" and hands it to me.

I've also given to a few panhandlers, said no to a lot more. But if it's a situation where I can just give them some food, I'll always do that. If someone's hungry, I don't really care why it is, I'll give them something to eat.

    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

Just watched a fella in Lexington at New Circle and Georgetown Rd standing with a sign asking for money/help. He is there about every time I go by there and looks down and out with his unshaven dirty appearance. He stands there looking like he is hurting and has a lost look in his eyes...until he just happened to see a police car at the stop light! Man he folded that cardboard up faster than a cup stacking champion and he moved faster than I could imagine him being able to. All of a sudden that lost look in his eyes was replaced with distress and panic. He was healed by the power of law enforcement!

I rarely give to pan handlers, but WHEN I do, I usually give gift certificates to Micky D's or somewhere like the such.

I work in Downtown Louisville, and have given my fair share of white castle and Micky gift certs to folks who genuinely are hungry. NEVER GIVE MONEY.

I almost stopped giving totally when I had a bum throw the certs in the garbage and tell me that was not effen money..........that really honked me off and turned me into a hard a$$ for a while.

    Later,

    Geo

    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

I almost always give them some change. Sometimes maybe even a couple of dollars. What they use it for I don't always know, but I hope that most use it for some food. If not, my intention was good and it is not like I am taking food out of my families mouths to give them money for a drink or whatever. I guess I read the sermon on the mount too many times!

    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

My question to the "panhandler" would be why dont you just go down to the local food stamp office and get you some stamps. It is that simple. No one should be hungry in this country as WE GIVE OUT FOOD STAMPS, that you can use to buy food. The only way u cannot get food stamps, and this does not disqualify your children or others in the hh, is be a convicted drug felon that has not completed a drug program, be a student not working 20 hrs avg a week, and be illegal. All these things only drecrease benifits, not stop them. No one should be panhandeling for food. I saw a guy one time begging said he was hungry and needed food, I offfered him a extra burger that I had, he refused, aparantly you cant buy booze with a burger. Like I said, getting food stamps is easy, I give them out all day. So why is someone begging?

    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

When I worked downtown there was 36 or 38 places a day where someone could get a free meal. So I would give panhandle's a ride to the JC Motel. If I was on a run I would make them rip up their sign.

Brother, no problem at all. I was just posting this incident because I'm an old coot that doesn't get out often anymore. I worked with the public (Pharmacist) for over 30 years and I avoid people (the public) since I quit-tired.

I'm the nicest person you'll ever find when I deal with clerks, waitresses, counter persons, etc that have to deal with me,since I'm now the "public" and I can relate to what their concerns and frustrations can be.

That being said, you better at least try to give me proper service. If a clerk "snaps" at me, I'll smile and ask "Having a bad day?" and attempt to diffuse the situation. If the attitude continues..............well I'll let them know exactly how they should properly deal with customers.

    Re: Panhandler at Krogers today

Not really, some use the local office to get mail. There are legit homless people that get food benifits, now called SNAP Benifits, they will use local office as mail address. A lot use friends family etc address's.
