Naw plenty of teams play good ball but in the last 5 years the championship has come through the SEC. I just love good football ...... As long as Ohio Sate doesn't win another one I'll be ok!

Don, don't misnderstand me. I agree the road to the title goes through the SEC and rightfully so. My only point is that some people act like the SEC is the only place that plays football and that if you are in the SEC you are automaticlly worthy of something without earning it. While there is Alabama, LSU, Arkansas etc. there is also Kentucky, Vanderbilt and the Mississippi schools and recently Tennessee that would not win any of the BCS conferences.

The whole system sstinks and is the only thing holding college football back from being the biggest sport in the country.

I conceded your point, but you seem to want to argue anyway. Fine by me.

I haven't seen anyone acting like the SEC is the only place where football is played. It's just the best place football is played. Period.

Aside from LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas, Georgia is playing very well lately. Year in and year out you can also expect Florida and Auburn to be top 25 and likely top 5. Miss State, and Ole Miss usually field some good teams too. Vandy would fare better in most any other conference too.

The BCS, and college football in general is certainly flawed, but it's still the biggest amateur sport in the country. I disagree any amateur sport could eclipse pro football, unless the owners' and players' greed puts them on lock out/strike.

I also disagree with you more or less saying college basketball is the shining example. It's not. Every year schools get in the tournament, sometimes because of who they are, while others who deserve to be there wind up in the NIT. For example, UK IMO has probabaly gotten some preferential treatment in the tournament brackets/seedings a time or 2 because of who they are.

BTW, I fell asleep just after the second half started last night, but UK has some serious talent. All that streetball mugging and posing after a good play shows they have long way to go mentally. If you could put Duke players' brains in their bodies, they'd be unbeatable.

Sorry, but I was not arguing, nor was I replying to your post. I was replying to what DJD said. The reason college basketball is the shining example is it is the best system. It is decided on the court, not by some people voting who have never seen many of the teams play.

I don't like thre showboating either. I don't like it when Louisville does it or any other team. That being said, get used toit, that is Cal's style, his teams at Memphis acted like that and he has not changed anything at UK.

Apologies, I didn't mean to hijack your post to DJD. Well truth be told, I did. Your comments were more than I could take.

So in college basketball there is no such thing as tournament at large bids decided by people voting? Certain conferences aren't subjectively granted more slots than others? Tournament invitations and seeding aren't decided by a committee vote?

I thought the football BCS system was based on statistical formulas run through the computer. The intent being to eliminate the old polling system, which when you think about is still in use by college basketball.

    Come on now.

The tournament does have at large bids, but there is a ton of research and debate that goes on before those spots are final, a whole lot more research than what goes on with the BCS. Also, the polling system has nothing to do with who plays for the National Championship. Plus in the BCS two human polls are factored in, the Coaches Poll and one other (the AP sued to stop them from using their poll). There is never anyone left out of the NCAA tourney that has a chance to win it all and they have all season to prove themselves. Also because there is a tournament, the good teams don't mind playing the other good teams, which is not always the case in college football.

Thanks Devilhorse for explaining the SEC so now I understand what you boys are talking about when i read the football threads. You must be joking when you talk about the CFL going out of business up here. No sir the CFL is strong. Have you heard of the Montreal Alouttes, Winnipeg Bluebombers, Edmonton Eskimos(My personal fav), Calgary Stampeders etc. It has the same set up and run the same as the American professional league. We dont do university sports on tv like you folks due as they young men can play all they want but they have school work to do that is more important so no spotlights are put on them. If they are good then they get recruited to the big leagues. The it is on tv. Now football is the second popular sport here to watch cuz of course hockey is number 1 in our books. I would like to see your professional league AFL winning team play our CFL winning team. I think that would be fun and good sportmanship. They could call it the North American championship and get a big trophy.

I would like to see Canadian football franchises in the NFL. they could field as good a team as here since players from everywhere can be on these teams, just have to be good enough.

Sorry 'gills, just goes to show you ignorance never stops me from shooting off at the keyboard. I bet our uniforms are just as tight as yours up there.

And Tim, I'm no huge fan of the BCS either. I shouldn't be debating a guy with your knowledge of sports, you're out of my league if you know what factors get plugged into the BCS computer. I still don't see the CB system as a shining example, but we can agree to disagree.

True Don, you are cool as a November weather front. No doubt about that.

I'm in a great mood because I'm taking a V day and going fishing tomorrow. Going to try out the 'new' Alabama/umbrella swimbait rig on Barren River Reservoir. If that doesn't work I'll throw some crankbaits. If that doesn't work I'll try spinnerbaits and plastics. If that doesn't work I'll try a few Bud Selects.

Now it sounds like football is alot like hockey in that a team that you would never think would win the Stanley Cup wins. Like the year the Ottawa Senators were the favourite to win and they had been playing great but a team of ducks from California won. It made no sense to me. Every year is different with teams. Some years they do well and some they dont. Its weird like that. I think the coaching staff have alot to do with that. This may be Alabama's year to win in football. Sometimes I wonder if it isnt just plain luck who wins. Now what does SEC mean?

Sorry ma'am. South Eastern Conference. Made up of certain colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Texas A&M has joined the conference also. The SEC is divided into east and west divisions, and depending on in-conference win/loss records, 2 teams may have to play each other for the SEC championship.

Whoever wins the SEC often kicks some other team's hapless azz for the national championship.

Interestingly enough, the potential is there (not likely, but my fingers are crossed) for 2 SEC teams, Alabama and LSU to play in the national championship game. The game's contestants are determined by computer crunched statistics, so If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, and I can hack my way into that system it could happen.

Football here is like hockey there. They both cause normally civil grown men to act like idiots. There used to be a pro football league in Canada, but it sorta went out of business. Y'all prolly thought it was a sissy sport, they don't even carry sticks.

There's a pro hockey team not too far from where I live, the Nashville Predators. The games are fun to go to, those guys are great athletes, but where I grew up in Alabama we shut everything down if a single ice crystal forms, so I don't understand the finer points of the game.
