    Shipping rods

Anyone ever ship rods to a destination they were gonna vacation at? I'm headed to Florida in the near future and wanted to take a few rods but didn't want to pay the airline fees. I figured it may be cheaper to use UPS or USPS or FedEx.....anyone ever do this?

I had a buddy ship his Canada equipment this past fall to me. We figured that would be much cheaper than checking. BOY, we were wrong. checking would have been 25 a bag......shipping cost 76.00 total, so he spent 26 extra by shipping.

On the return trip, we did a hybrid. He checked a bag of heavier stuff, and I shipped a box with light stuff, including his life jacket and a couple other items, Total both 48 bucks. NOT BAD.

    Later,

I had a different experience. I already had one of those "bazooka" rod storage cases. (Flambeau 5872 Bazuka 38-72 Rod Case )

We were headed to Cape Cod, and I shipped them 2 weeks early to the motel we were going to stay at. I only paid $18.00 USPS ground to ship them, in 2008.

Prices are up, I know, and some folks don't want to ship that far in advance.

Borrow a tube, take it in to a UPS, and see what they quote ya if it goes "slow boat to China mode". In my opinion, FEDEX is just crazy high. I just raqn an example on the USPS page, of a 46 inch long x 4 inch tube (2 piece rods?) that weighed 5 pounds and from Etown KY to Orlano Florida via Priority Mail, taking 4-5 days to get there, and at the post office it said it would cost $14.05

Thanks Bob, I will do that. I want to take about 4 rods for me and my girlfriend to use. I'm going to check on what it cost to ship the reels as well.
I will insure these badboys because that could get expensive if they get damaged.

Don USPS is the way to go. I ship a lot of stuff and they are by far the cheapest. I sent some jigs and ups and it was like $16.00 the same jigs usps is less than $5.00. Lessoned learned.

I have shipped a few blanks and rods. PVC pipe to protect the rods. USPS was the cheapest route. Cost will depend on the length of the rod. You can probably get an idea of the price by checking the USPS site online. If you need a tube to ship a few rods, I have some extras here that you are welcome to take. I would take the reels with you. Easy enough to put in luggage.

Thanks man. I'll give you a shout and see how the rods I want to take work out with the tubes.

    Re: Shipping rods

I had a rod delivered by united parcel, the tube was bent. My advice, get a piece of pvc pipe. I used pvc for my rods when we were trailering. In my opinion its the safest way to go.

    Re: Shipping rods

I've done both. Some years ago I baggage checked a PVC rod tube, and it was fine. Flew Southwest and it didn't cost any extra then, don't know about now. If you ship, use PVC instead of cardboard.
