    Johnson 35 HP problem

Was on the lake yesterday, and had a problem for the first time. Made the fatal mistake of saying the motor was running good!!
When starting to excelerate, the motor revved up but something isd slipping. It stays in contact when just going above idle speed, but when you try to go, it just spins out. Pulled the prop this morning to make sure the slines had not stripped, but it looked good.
It is an '81 model, have owned it since it was new. Anyone have any suggestions before taking it into service? I am not afraid to pull it apart if I knew what I may be looking for, but with it being intermittent, didn't know if I would be able to tell anything or not.

Also, I live in Bardstown, any recommendations onn where to take it for service if needed?
    Thanks for any help

sounds like you slipped the rubber inside the prop you can take prop off and sometimes you can see the center piece offcenter

Pulled the prop back off, but don't understand the "offcenter" ? Do see the rubber "sleeve" in the prop, but how can you tell if it is slipping?

    Thanks,

put the motor in gear (NOT RUNNING) and see if you can make it slip by hand

Have come to the conclussion that it is the prop slipping. Looks like the sleeve has moved 1/4" within the prop.
Put an old beat up prop on, it did not slip. Put newer prop on, it slips.
What now? New prop? Rebuild prop?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

You can send it off or find somebody close and have a new hub put in less then $75.

What you are describing sounds like a spun hub. A friend of mine spun a hub on his motor and I was thinking it cost him $35 to press out the old hub and install a new one.

    Sounds like a spun hub.

The hub is meant to spin if you hit something - it's basically a safety measure to keep from damaging the prop shaft.

I used to have a '79 model 35 hp Johnson. I ended up buying a new prop when I ran into this. I think I paid about $70 for a Michigan Wheel prop from some online retailer.
