    Re: Expensive Lures

EVERY SINGLE person I ran into this past weekend at KY lake were throwing the Alabama rig.......EVERY PERSON. And quite a few were throwing it a couple weekends ago.

I figured I'd check at the cabin for going price.........so here is a breakdown.

Cheapest knockoff 4 inch spread .........16.00 bucks..
    4 cheap swimbaits..........4 bucks minimum.
spool of 50lb braid.........YEA if you could find it......20 bucks.

So just to be IN THE GAME, you're looking at maybe 40 bucks to throw a BAIT.

Lose it, and you're out at least 25 bucks to replace it..........

    HOLY CRAP.

BUT.........there were stretches during the day where we were blanking and other folks were catching. Will I buy one...........Hell NO......

    Later,

    Geo

Geo, I think you and I were the only ones on the lake not throwing that A-rig. However, I will confess I bought one after weigh in on Friday.

I have plano boxes full of crankbaits. But Bandits are my favorite crankbaits. I've used all the Rapalas but always go back to Bandit. From the footloose to the 300 series I've caught more fish on them than any other crankbait.

dont kick the expensive baits too hard ( i dont like th price) but ...........
i like deep divers like the dd-22 and broke down an got a lucky craft cb-20
and the results were ausome it had a different presintation, sound and look alot better hooks and caught lots of fish on it but i still use the dd-22 when possible
i hate the fact everytime i loose one its another $18 down the drain

on any given day any one lure can be the best on the market but what u throw the most is what u catch the most fish on think about it

How would we really, actually, know?

You can crash test 2 exactly same cars, at the same speed, and see different occupant results with and without seatbelts. Wish we could do that with fishing lures.

Me, I pitch what I have the most confidence in, and what I can afford to replace if it works.
I agree 100%. Fishing a bait with confidence is just as important as what that bait is. If you don't think a bait will catch fish it probably won't.

I think eventually fish will get conditioned and stop hitting it. It is just a matter of time before the A-rig is another fad like chatter baits. The old classics will always produce.

I like strike king and rapala both dont really use any other brands. if one isn't working the other is and if they both don't work then they just don't want a crankbait.

I will admit......when trolling at the local bar, $20's catch more than $5's.

I mean the sandbar, and Lucky Craft Pointer 125 Jointed Smasher Hardbait versus a STORM Suspending WildEye Swimming Shad .

Why,.......whaaaaa did ya think I meant.

Hey, ever throw one of these?

Here's a good reason why you should:

    Re: Expensive Lures

Like most, I tend to throw the rapalas, bombers, bandits, and similarly priced/quality cb's most of the time. But occasionally i do throw the lc's and other higher end lures. Usually with positive results that make me wonder why I don't throw them more often. They have higher quality hooks and finish and tend to run true right out of the box. With the 7' rods I use for cb's, semi-heavy fluoro line, a quality plug knocker, and the fact that most of my higher end cb's aren't deep divers, I have little to no risk of losing them. Makes me have even more confidence to throw them into some of the nasty places that draw strikes. Just my take on the matter. But, as mentioned above, I prefer to get them with a gift card or points earned instead of straight outta the pocket. Feels a little better that way.

I throw mostly custom made cranks that are made locally in cincinnati and have caught more bass on them the last 2 years than any other cranks I have thrown. I also like bandits alot. I have a few $1.50 cotton cordell cranks from wal mart that I absolutely love. Everytime I go to wal mart I check to see if they have any and if they do I buy them all.

    Re: Expensive Lures

I agree, the price of crank baits is ridiculous. I'm not sure when this tax kicked in, but manufacturers now have to pay 10% off the top to the IRS.

    from http://www.irs.gov/publications/p510/ch05.html:
A tax of 10% of the sale price is imposed on many articles of sport fishing equipment sold by the manufacturer. This includes any parts or accessories sold on or in connection with the sale of those articles.
Pay this tax with Form 720. No tax deposits are required.

This seems like a high rate of tax to me. I kicked around the idea of making baits and selling them online, but paying 10% right off the top is excessive. Of course, the Govt. taxes them again when they are purchased.

    Re: Expensive Lures

Crankbaits last a long time. Rarely do I lose one, especially since I am able to retrieve about 95% of the snagged ones with my crankbait retrieval tool.

So with that being said, the amount spent isn't that big of a deal since I'll have it for a long time and catch a lot of fish with it.

I don't look at expensive baits being better either - price is of no concern...some cheaper baits work better than expensive ones on certain days.

I do price shop though - it makes no sense to pay 40% more at one store simply because it's close to the lake when I can make an order online and be able to buy more baits for the same amount of money.
