Quitting Tobacco
I'm 28 years old and have been dipping for 13 years, and have finally decided its time to quit....I know there have been posts on here before from guys who have quit, and I was just wondering what helped you get through it....I've got the headaches and feeling like my head is in a fog....I was dipping atleast a can a day and tried going cold turkey....I've tried jolly ranchers and everything else but the only thing that seems to hit the spot is food....This is the second time I've tried to quit, the first time I jumped from 180lbs, which I'd been my whole life, to 200 and stayed there....This time I've already jumped from 200 to 210lbs

Re: Quitting Tobacco
Based upon your past posts I consider you as an intelligent man and athletic (at least in the past) So I feel like I'm telling you what you already know.
#1 you have to really want to quit. I mean 100%.
#2 get some caffeine through coffee or energy drinks ro help with the headaches( worked for me)
#3 excersize to keep the weight off and take your mind off the stuff.
#4 sunflower seeds kept my mouth busy but eventually I stopped that too.
That's all I got man! Good luck it can be done!!!

Re: Quitting Tobacco
and the worst part about it, fishing, which is my favorite thing to do, is also my favorite time to dip....I'll fish an 8 hour tourny and won't take a dip out all day....The first Dale Hollow trip I take in the next couple weeks will kill me

Re: Quitting Tobacco
I don't know if this is any help, but it's well documented that the extra weight is less of a risk to your health than the tobacco. Whatever you do, PLEASE don't start again for that reason!

Re: Quitting Tobacco
I smoked and chewed tobacco for 25 years, before my youngest son was born in 99' (11 years difference between him and my daughter,15 years between him and my oldest son) I decided I needed to change my lifestyle so I could live long enough to raise my little one.
The first thing I did was convince myself 100% that I wanted to quit,I then took a mild anti-depressant Zyban for one month before I even tried to quit and for 3 months total,I also used a little 12 step philosophy by saying a little prayer to my higher power (God) every morning upon waking and before bedtime.
I never once craved a cigarette, but did catch myself reaching into my shirt pocket where I kept packs at and a few times sticking a carpenters pencil in my mouth as I used to work with a cigarette dangling from my mouth at all times.
The worst thing that happened was my metabolism slowed to a crawl and gained some weight, but a good diet and excercise plan can fix that.
Before my back injury I could work most younger men into the ground and ran up and down mountains digging ginseng and hunting without a huff or a puff.
I felt so much better and It's one of the smarter things I've ever done especially with the high cost of tobacco these days,I save alot of money.
I've watched my father-in-law,my brother, and at least 3 close friends die from lung cancer, throat cancer, and emphysemia because of tobacco use,it's not a pleasant way to go.

Re: Quitting Tobacco
I smoked for over 25 yrs, I also dipped and chewed before I started smoking.,I used Chantix to quit smoking, been quit over 4 yrs now and now the smell makes me sick, I even took a did a while back and it made me sick, so Chantix worked. also. you have to want to quit to make anything work. Do it you have nothing to lose. one lees can of dip another bag of worms or a crankbait. You can do it.

Re: Quitting Tobacco
Peppered Beef Jerky.... Needed the pepper for the burn I was not getting. But as said before watch the weight gain because alot of time you dipped when you were hungry and it offset it. Also when you feel hunger drink a big glass of water sometimes you are just thirsty.

Re: Quitting Tobacco
Dipped for twenty years about a can a day. Man what a nasty habit. I tried to quit one other time and ate a bunch of candy to offset the want. Well I had quit for about four months I think and decided I could have just one when I was fishing and nowhere else. Well that didn't work as it led to another one here or there which led to going full time again. I quit on July 4, 2010 for what I hope is for good. Yes I miss it a lot. I quit cold turkey but I knew 100% that it was time. I didn't want my kids to start something I was not exactly proud of. Have been strong so far and I long as I know I can't even have 1 I will be fine. I have a very strong will power and mind and that is what is necessary.
