The Democrats are willing to compromise and make spending cuts, but think they need to be accompanied by some tax increases. It's the Republicans who have refused to compromise, citing Grover Norquist's tax pledge that they've all signed, and which has them all by the cojones. As I recall, "the same America we've always had" is one in which both sides compromise, which the Republicans, not the Democrats, are refusing to do. Like I said before, I don't want to let the Democrats off the hook, because the scope of the cuts needs to be larger than they seem to be comfortable with, but they're at least willing to TALK about cuts. As soon as the tax increases get mentioned (which are inevitable), the Republicans close their ears.
