Gonna try my hand at sauger fishing

Jig head colors don't make much difference but size does when fishing over the rocks.Need one that will just barely stay on the bottom.Best colors are chartreuse,white with orange and pink working good at times for twister tails.

I seen a gent throwing a floating jig somewhat "Carolina style". The difference was....he had an egg sinker about 6" ahead of the jig. And he was tipping it with a minnow. It looked to be around 5/8oz egg sinker. He defanatly overcame the wind issue.

Chuck with over 30 ft at the lower gauge it's going to be tough sauger fishing. I've had the best luck carolina rigging a med. shiner below any rocks leading to a mud bank.The rock point below the back parking has a nice mud bank, the bite is slow but when you get one it's usually nice.The bite is also best at dawn and dusk. I think I'm gonna try the Markland **** on Friday. If I read the river report correctly...it looks like it is going to be at 21'. Hopefully the saugar will be there. I have a craving and the freezer is empty.

Anyone ever catch any cats this time of year there? I'm not much of a catfish guy but I've heard of folks throwing big hunks of skipjack out while there fishing...sometimes resulting in big winter cats?

Markland will be the same snag wise so like what was said above the right weight with the wind/current to keep just above rocks are key. also some dont think color matters but I like orange-black and chartreuse sometimes in combination in muddy/murky water and lighter colors in clearer waters. cloudy/clear factor in as well.

Drove over Markland last Friday and water was way up over sidewalk and unfishable except from boat so check water levels before going and be safe and good luck!!! Tech

Do yourself a favor when the water is high, and find a creek that feeds into the river, and fish there. The sauger will hold-up at the mouth or just back from the mouth to get a rest from the high water and current.
