I doubt if it would be anywhere close to doubled. To speak broadly, people who have jobs also are likely to vote.
But I agree, Saturday would raise turnout.

I have to agree, it's just stupid not to move it to the weekend. Let it be Saturday AND Sunday. Voter turnout will be doubled, if not more.

I bet employers would appreciate it as well. We have to schedule around allowing folks to vote. Out of town jobs and rides have to be considered so a weekend vote would be welcome.
It's not a big problem and I encourage voting I'm just sayin.....
Turnout wouldn't be doubled...but it would be increased if voting was switched to the weekend. It would be much more convenient for employers and employees. The way I look at it though - If thousands upon thousands of fighting men and women can lose their lives over hundreds of years protecting my freedom to vote, the least I can do is skip my lunch hour once a year, get up early and get to the polls before work, or get there on the way home before they close. Those that truly value the right to vote will get there.
But you know, I can file my taxes online with a secure electronic signature...get a refund or pay electronically...all while sitting in my underwear and scratching myself. Why can't we come up with some kind of online voting system that can't be hacked or fuddled with so that folks can vote from home, from work, or from the front deck of a Ranger if they want to....and it somehow be secure, but anonymous? If we can put a man on the moon...if Al Gore can invent the internet...if a black dude can become President...surely we can figure this one out to make it more modern/convenient.
Competes with the traffic at bars on the weekend. Monday is bad, first day back to work and possibly still hung over. Tuesday works because your co-workers tell you to go vote Tuesday on Monday.
Hey, if oil goes up, I might need the original tranport method and day to get there.Answer: Tuesday was picked for people who had to travel to town by horse-and-buggy to vote:

My guess long ago was that they don't want high voter turnouts. Of course if they wanted higher percentage of turnout they would of moved it to Saturday back in about 1960
Maybe that's it, they really don't want the higher turnout. "Doubled" is probably an overstatement, but it would be significantly improved.
