Skipps for dinner?

I was out at Taylorville catching some skips today and an Asian gentleman asked me if he could have them. After I told him no I need them for my bait supply he told me he eats them. Skippy on the table....Who would have thunk it! Are they any good?

Guys, Very new to the Board...I find this one interesting! I work with MANY Aisian folks in Central Northern Ky. I have seen some real awful seafood stuff that they eat. Funny thing is, most Japanese persons will not TOUCH a catfish. I have offerred some of them my catch, and they graciously deny with the same reaction to us on skipjacks. Don't knock it till you try it.

My wife is Asian (Chinese from Taiwan) and I have a company in Taiwan so I travel overseas a lot, (when I am not fishing of course). A lot of smaller fish that most don’t eat actually taste pretty good, I am a big fan of the whole fish cooked complete, it is much better than filleted meat only. You gotta learn to pick through the bones and only eat the eyeballs if you want (I do, wife don’t) but really they are good. I don’t know about a skip, but I have eaten a lot of different stuff and you would be surprised how good some of it is, and some not so good of course . Smaller fish are easier to cook whole or fry whole and most taste quite well.
Although you can’t eat a 12” red snapper in the US they are dang good on the plate elsewhere. A lot of the fish I eat over there looks a lot like what my bait was in Destin, FL last weekend.

Guess Asians can have different taste,my sister in law from Taiwan loves catfish.
Several years ago I got up early one morning and walked along the St Andrews bay with some shrimp and a small outfit,caught a bunch of crokers,chokers pinfish and some I didn't know what were and cleaned them for dinner.Some were as good as bluegill or crappie but some were about like eating fresh water drum or carp.Didn't learn a thing as I didn't keep up with what I was eating.
Envy JUSTINHALL going on trips to Destin.Fish the panhandle a lot but have never been able to fish Destin from a boat.

Hey Chuck,could you tell me where and how at tville you were catching these?I would like to catch some shad for bait,i usually castnet on the lake for gizzard shad but was afraid i wouldnt find them in the winter.thanks for anything you can tell me.If i could catch some bait i might go try those cats.

I was fishing the tail waters at T-ville just below the sign that says no snagging past this point. I was throwing a shad rap.

I know most of the folks that use to live below McAlpine Dam in Louisville used to eat shad on a regular basis. Aren't the Alewives in Cumberland and Dale just about the same Herring you buy in a can at the grocery.

You know a lot of the fish we eat in restaurants and other places is shipped here from Asia. There is a thread on the off-topics board I think with some videos. After seeing the videos of the white fish that is raised in Asia and shipped here I might just get excited about eating a skippy our of the Taylorsville tailwater!

Side note--
My brother once grabbed a whole trout out of the cooler and took a bite out of it...called it sushi
