Uni knot vs blood knot

Question do most prefer using a blood knot or uni knot when tying flouro to braid on a spin real. I am going to try this method this year of using a flouro leader on braid to reduce the tangles on my spin reel. Just not sure which knot gives the most strength. Any advise is appreciated.

i use a blood knot because its what I have always used. don't know if the uni knot is any better, but my knots hold up so I don't really have the need to try another.

I've tried several but exclusively use the Albright knot now. Never had one fail and it's actually easier for me to tie without forgetting. LOL

I appreciat the information. I think I would trust the blood knot also. I will check at the Albright knot on you tube. I am not farmilar with that knot. Good luck fishing this season.

I'm a certified Knot Geek, I actually have tons of rope around my house just to fiddle with for knot tying. My wife thinks I'm nuts for tying knots all of the time but if I'm old in a wheelchair, I'll never be bored.lol.

To your question, I use spinning reels exclusively and have never needed a backer line. But I'm panfishing/freshwater fishing with Mono, so I really don't need a backer line. A blood knot has always been known as a VERY good knot BUT hard to tie...especially out in the wild(on a boat with a little wind, breeze, boat rocking and shifting etc). A Surgeon's Knot would probably work well and it's much easier to tie in these conditions that you'll face. The Albright Knot is a good one and it's much easier to tie than the blood knot. The Uni Knot isn't quite as strong as the Blood Knot but it's a little easier to tie.

I'd either go with the Surgeon's Knot or Albright Knot. I think the Surgeon's would be the easiest to tie and it's a good enough knot...especially if this is for freshwater fishing. Saltwater fishing usually demands Blood Knots.

How do you keep your line from twisting on the spin. That's the problem I have. I know I can put the line in water and troll it off empty and then real it in but it eventually twist up again. I was told to us braid as the backer but know I need a backer for that to keep it from slipping on the reel on hard hook sets. I use it a lot when I am fishing slow for suspended bass. I just get tired of the line twist. I appreaciate any thoughts.

I've come to the conclusion that line twist and spinning reels are a fact of life.

I use a line minder setup to put line on my ultralight spinning reels. And I still get line twist a lot.

I started fishing my spinning reels a different way. Instead of casting a lot I use them for drop shot fishing instead. I fish straight down below the boat from the front seat. I can detect the bites better when fishing vertical like this and I don't have to worry about line twist as much.

But if you are worried about line twist just troll the line out behind the boat more often. That's the only way I can think of to avoid the line twisting so much.

Oh. If you use a barrel swivel it may help prevent line twist caused by the baits spinning around.

I use to use a lot of small spinner baits for crappie fishing and they were making my line twist a lot.

A lot of the twist comes when you put the line on the reel.
These days I put the spool on the deck of my boat and run the line under my anchor wench. The line can spin off the reel clockwise from the bottom or the top of the spool and that may make a difference. So reel in some line and the give it some slack and see if you get a lot of twist. If you do then flip the spool of line over and wind it off the other way. That may help prevent a lot of the line twist when you put the line on the reel the first time.

I'm not sure that it's possible to completley eliminate the line twist though. I frustrates me all the time. Espeically when I am tying to fish with a long rod and can't reach the tip of the rod to get the line unwrapped if it twists around the end of the rod. I broke the tip off my 12 ft BnM rod and have not replace it yet as I hate using that rod because the line will twist around the last guide and get hung up there. Due to the design of the rod guides it's harder to just shake the rod tip to get the line to unwrap off the tip of the rod. So have to get to the tip end of the rod and unwind the line by hand. That's a real pain in the butt. And a few minutes later the lines wrapped around the tip of my rod again. So I stopped trying to fish with the long rods due to the line twist.

If you are using braid tied directly to the spool, then that slippage happens. Here's a trick: put a piece of electrical tape around the spool, sticky side down, then tie your knot onto the spool. The electrical tape compresses under pressure and keeps the line from slipping on the spool. Since I started doing this, I haven't had that problem. There's no way to ultimately stop all line twist though. I use braid with a flouro leader and will still get line twist while drop shotting.

#1 when you put line on spinning reel you need to put the spool on the ground with label up start reeling on line after 10 to 15 turns stop reeling and drop your rod tip and see if your line twist if it does turn the spool over and repeat you should not get any twist.

#2 after your cast always close the bail with your hand and not by engaging the reel always put some tension on the line before reeling you can usually do this by lifting the rod or turning it sideways or use your finger. Some lures do twist line and should be avoided with spinning or use a swivel.

#3 do not crank handle when the drag is slipping just hold the steady pressure and let the line run off If you have to turn the fish hold the spool with your hand and turn the fish with your rod.

#4 watch for loops if you have a loop showing back the drag odd and pull line with bail closed until loop is gone. Also do not over cast

#5 you are correct in running line behind boat to remove twist.

Great Advice. Watching for loops in the line before you cast is one that I need to do more often. That's the best way to prevent a bad tangle and having to cut line off the reel and retying baits. The small untra light spinning reels don't hold that much line anyway.

another thing to remember is to NOT fill the reel up too full. Fill the line up on the reel but leave a little room at the end so that the line stays on the reel property. If you overfill the reel you are asking for problems.

And if there is not enough line on the reel that can prevent you from getting long casts. It's time to respool if that occurs.

I appreciate all the advice. I def believe some of the suggestion are answers to my problem. I have been filling the reel with allot of line lately. I also only use it for fishing a Shaky Head or texas rigged creature bait. Thanks again and I truly understand now it maybe just part of the fishing when making X amount of cast.

#3 Is spot on. If you're drag is singing and you're reeling in, all you're doing is twisting the line.

#4 I learned that trick some years ago and have taught it to a lot of people. When you see that loop on your reel, loosen your drag, do not open the bale and pull your line out until the loop comes out.
