Havent posted in a while because I am normally fishing out of my kayak and do not bring a camera with me. I caught this bass out fishing for crappie on New Years Eve in a private pit. I had just hooked my first crappie of the day on a gulp alive leech when I was having trouble reeling it in. Finally I was able to gain some line on it and swimming behind it was a massive fish. I landed the crappie and then dropped him back down to get a better look at the fish. A bass came back up and tried eating the at least 8 inch crappie again. I soon switched lures and on the first cast missed the bass. I ran home reel quick and grabbed a bigger reel and my net. After messing around with a jig I couldnt cast out far enough so I switched to a spinnerbait and told my dad I was going to catch it that cast. The fish hit and a short while later my dad netted it.

I've been tempted to get the 20 dollar electronic rapala scale but don't know how long it last or how accurate it is. If I get one which would be the best one. So the answer is no I would guess the bass was close to 8 maybe high 7's and definently 8 over the summer and during spawn. I've caught one that was 23.5 around spawn in may from the same pit In 2011 that was 8 or 9 but I was fishing out of my yak and didn't get a picture. That one was the most fun because it drug me around and I had to lip it in the yak
king you have a picture of the one you caught?
I hope you put that sucker back. She will be double digits this spring. I would agree, high 7's easy, probably a shade over 8. Nice fish. She will top out over 10 this spring.I've been tempted to get the 20 dollar electronic rapala scale but don't know how long it last or how accurate it is. If I get one which would be the best one. yep threw it back i dont ever plan on getting a fish mounted just fish for fun i dont know if i caught the same one back in may but the other was the same length but had extra pound or two on it due to spawn
Read an article by the Texas Parks and wildlile a while back stating a 12 pound female bass will carry approx 6 to 8 ounces of eggs. 2 pounds of eggs? Thats what brick weighs.
didn't say all the weight would be from eggs.
I have a rapala scale and its accurate (a 5lb weight weighed 5 lbs). I have had mine for 2+ years now. Its a worthy investment
I should get my eyes checked. I wouldve put that fish at 5.5 or so. Either way, thats a great fish to catch mid winter in Indiana.(or Super Early spring with how this weather has been)
i carry two, one digital and one spring, in case i believe one is wrong (nice to have during tournaments). but it is hard to tell weight from pictures. sometimes i look at the lunker club in bassmaster and laugh when some people say some of those bass weigh 10 lbs![]()
yeah, nice fish. but id give it a 5 something. 6 TOPS.
