Seems that it would be the exact opposite. I am not advocating any new "tax" but my self being someone whom fishes tournaments i saw maybe 5 fish die last year total, why wouldn't there be a tax on people that eat the fish they take from a water way?(again not saying this should happen just proving a point)

we already DID pay for the fish we keep to eat....the day we purchased our fishing license. as magiksmallie said, creel limits are calculated to take in to account the fisheaters, the tournaments, natural mortality etc etc.
i see the essence of the idea...but it would be difficult to incorporate.
if im going to pay for fish i keep i will target walleye....whats next? a premium for certain species?

Lets say BASS comes to KY Lake. It has 100 boaters and 100 non-boaters. What does that do for the local economy, hotels, restaurants, gas stations. Not to mention all the new fishing licenses that are bought so guys can fish a week. Then it airs on TV. People from all over the country see the show and say hey, they caught them pretty good down there I think I may spend my vacation down there.

What does all that bring as far as money to the state?

Well if we tax the fisherman then skiers , lakehome owners , lookers , campers , swimmers . When will it end ? Thats my veiw . Scott

I get a kick out of how people want to tax fishermen. Most people done know how much fisherman already pay. Every fishing lure produced as a 10% excise tax on it. I think we should tax every beer and soda produced for cleanup fees associated with the cleanup. Also an extra tax on skis better they can only be used in the waters. Don't forget an extra tax on life vests. Like they said before where des it end. Ask any local business if a tournament brings in any business (tackle shops gas station otels which are taxed). The hipocricy never ends. I have driven race cars for the last 16 seasons ad guess we need to tax any and all sporting events to cover the cost of te extra road use getting all the fans and equipment there. Guess we ask need a noise ordinance for those big loud boats going as fast as they
n. Ticket them. Thre s soMe money. we we can keep on going.

What do you think about a 10% fee on all tournments going to the state to restock and maintain our fishery.If a b.A.S.S tour. can pay a $100 grand for 1st. place,they can pay to play.Instead of us tax payer`s footing the bill.Just a thought. Bullit

Since this is your first post..... Taxpayer dollars DO NOT go towards restocking or wildlife management. The liscense, tags, and permits as well as part of the sales tax (just part of the 6% KY sales tax) on outdoor item sold in Kentucky. Sorry but the taxpayers in Kentucky pay no extra taxes that go towards maintaining or restocking. Check with the KY Department of Fish and Wildlife on this.

This is from Connecticut, but the FEDERAL programs are for all states.

Most of the money comes from sporting goods sales, and from what I can tell the go into a general fund, and that "general" fund is used to help pay for wildlife programs.

AND state WILDLIFE grants are completely paid from that program.

While we're "officially" paying this with teh 11% tax on manufacturers, It is coming from the FED in TAXES and not solely from state sources.

I'd like to see a fishing license plate. The state could add a little fee for it and we could have a nice looking license plate for our automobiles.

Indiana did that with the Heritage Fund..but now since Obannon STOLE that money, I REFUSE to spend the extra money on the environmental plate.

When STATE gubment gives back the 8 or 11 million they STOLE, then I might.

I stand corrected. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife utilizes monies from the Federal Program, "The Wildlife Restoration Act". While some of these monies are used in fish stocking most is for reintroducing wildlife or other projects. The monies DOES come from taxes on the sale of sporting goods (which we all contribute to and rightfully so). In other words, the more you buy (please see any and all avid hunters and fishermen), the more you are actually contributing (please look at all the money most bass guys spend). So, ALL tourney fishermen are already paying their fair share and as should ALL sportsman. If we are all utilizing a resource, we should all pay for it. I'm sorry but as long as someone is fishing tourneys,fishing for fun, or for eating.....ALL of us are using the resource by either intentionally killing fish to eat or unintentionally killing fish by foul-hooking or not properly taking care of them in the livewell. Either way, there is only truly one way to ensure lots of fish is not by overstocking them but by quitting fishing altogether. As anyone can see if you penalize tourney fisherman by taxing ONLY them, then I'm sure their would be less tourneys, less money spent on lures, line, fishing reel, rods, etc..thus..less money taken in from the tax of sproting goods sales, thus less money for fish and wildlife programs for restocking..... While all fisherman are "paying their fair share" (sounds like a cliche from inept politicians) there is one aspect of tournament fishing that no one has bothered to point out. Unlike casual fisherman who are there for the enjoyment and possibly some fish for the table the tournament crowd is all about money. They utilize the resources --the fish, the lake, and the facilities to profit from it. Not so much the collective tournament fisherman as only so many are going to come into the money but those who put on the tournaments profit too. I have always felt that tournaments should contribute something more for their dominant use of the resources for profit. That all said I do agree with the previous point that fisherman of all stripes do contribute much to the local economy with their purchase of supplies and services and the larger, organized tournaments will go far in that regard...
