I usually just dip the line. It also helps if every now and then when you get the ice out of the guides, run your fly line through your fingers, massaging it a little to wamr it and soften it.

Went out to one of my local creek holes this past saturday. 18deg. when I left the house, but needed to get out. I ran into an issue casting because my line was stiff with ice and the guides were freezing up. I have battled this with spinning gear by dipping the rod in the water, but the fly line never seemed to thaw out. It was very hard to shoot any line. Any tips?

I usually just stay in bed a little longer or have an extra cup of coffee before I leave the house![]()
