I'm going fishing this Saturday. Trying to decide between going for some muskie at Cave Run or heading up to Meldahl for some sauger/drum/waleye. Has anyone been fishing either one lately?
Can't help you out with a fishing report, but if you catch a drum (sheephead is what I call them) out of the OH river, keep the dang thing or throw it up on shore. I've caught more drum out of that river than bass the last couple of years.
Drum is a native fish in the ohio river and should not be killed just because you do not know how to catch bass out of the river.
I've been fishing tailwaters of Cave Run a couple of days a week for last two months for crappie and sauger ,caught lots of crappie until recently, one sauger , I've musky fished a few times there, none at the lake. I've seen at least 25 muskies caught, only a few of those were released, most were caught on live suckers or chubs, a few on swim baits like the 4" Storm Shad swim bait. There was a 46lb. musky caught in the tailwaters a week ago on a 10" Zoom plastic worm. I have a buddy who has caught and released several muskies on bass spinnerbaits walking along the shore near the dam and the Scotts Creek area. Hope this helps, haven't fished Meldahl at all this year, seems everytime I look at the Ohio, it's been up.
I am going to give Meldahl a go on Saturday. I have never been up there, but looks like its the right time of year, if we can just keep the water level down. I am new at sauger fishing, but I just have to get out on the water, cabin fever is killing me! I have read a few reports that say the big females are there. I will be out in a yellow skeeter, stop by if you are out there.
Due to time constraints for my fishing partner, we are going to try Kinkaid tomorrow. I will let everyone know how it goes. Good luck!
Tweek,
So how was Kincaid Lake??
