    General Sauger fishing question

Ive been thinking of fishing below some Ky river dams for sauger probably around the frankfort area. I was just wondering where to focus on fishing for them. Didnt know if they went right up to the dam in the turbulent water or do they stay down from the dam a little or is does it just depend on the day and water conditions. Sorry if this is a dumb question, just never tried this type of fishing before. Thanks.

I always do better just to the side of the main current.

Find a break in the current closest to the dam, you will find the sauger.

Bassky is right on. Adding to it if you find a current break near a drop off all the better. Fish on the bottom with 1/8 oz to 1/2 oz jigs -- what ever it takes to stay near the bottom with the given current. Fishing the ohio I use 1/4 oz the most. 2.5" or 3" curly tails work great white, green, or chartreuse are my favorites. You can cast or vertical jig. I ususally do a combination of both...

Good luck, I've poked around Boonesboro looking for sauger and I've struck out though I know they're there.

I've done great on the Ohio this winter, but the Ky river has skunked me so far.

    Re: General Sauger fishing question

Thanks for the tips from everyone, might try some on thursday before the front comes in. Only reason why i was asking is that i fish the river in frankfort 2-3 days a week in spring thru fall for bass, and occasionally catch some nice sauger here and there. Hoping to find a some schooled up together. Thanks again.

    Re: General Sauger fishing question

The deal with fishing below the dams is that sauger make a spawning run upstream starting in early winter as they stage actually spawning late winter / early spring (soon). So as they move upstream they stack up below the dams and become concentrated there. Later in the year they tend to be scattered catching one here one there as you mentioned. Good luck Thursday. Fish should be active ahead of that front...
