    Re: A serious question

People have gambled for years, and will continue to do so. Yes for some its an addiction, for many more its recreation.I find most poker boring, craps to hectic. Roulette intriging but I dont play. Lottery scratch offs"********" lotto the same.I went to one horse race, didn't do anything for me.BUT its my money, I'll spend the way I want. Gambling is not a sin, if you think so, dont do it.

The reason there aren't more new jails in cities where casinoes are prevalent is because the tax money is used for law enforcement to arrest the criminals, run them through the court system with a public defender paid with tax money, some are released on probation, others are jailed, some are treated like fishing: CATCH AND RELEASE. Money that was allocated for new jails is being used for pet projects of everyone from the governor, to the sheriff, to the commissioners, and everyone else who wants a piece of the pie.
Bug the lottery was brought up by someone else.

As for your contention that casinos bring in all this extra crime, studies have shown otherwise. People against gambling tend to ignore the facts and argue against it using emotion and not facts.

I could have sworn that you said your daughter was using lottery money for her college education. I assumed that you were talking about the lottery or, at least, receiving scholarship money from it.

I'm sorry that the studies misled so many people. I can drive an hour to an hour and-a-half and see more casinoes than I care to see. The political side has the factual reports whitewashed for selfish reasons. I read the police reports from several of the cities where casinoes are located and they tell a different story altogether. I'm not including reports from two large Indian Reservations that have casinoes. They are tribal and are held to a different form of government.

If your comment that "people against gambling tend to ignore the facts and argue against it using emotion and not facts" was directed at me....you missed by a mile.

I did bring up the fact that Keys money comes from lottery proceeds, only because others brought up the lottery and said it wasn't working.

I didn't miss at all. And kudos to you for being able to drive an hour and a half to a casino. I can be at one in thirty minutes by crossing the bridge. My guess is, I have spent much more time around casinos than you have, unless you are a degenerate gambler. I don't gamble, but have spent a lot of years in the sport of boxing and most of your bigger fight cards are at the Casinos. I have spent time around casinos in Vegas, Atlantic City, Tunica and three different ones in southern Indiana. I have yet to see on e single arrest, so excuse me if I have a hard time believing this. SOunds like something the pastor told you!

You missed by a mile....AGAIN. My pastor doesn't preach about casinoes, horse races, and lotteries; he preaches from the Bible. I didn't say what I did about arrest records to convince you one way or the other. I said it because it is the truth. Because you don't have access to the same information that I have doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

You must be having a tough time because you sure are grinding your teeth a lot. Is your face also turning red? I'm not wasting anymore of my time on this thread.

    Re: A serious question

Tim_T, I have no doubt that there are some benifits of casinos. The negative stuff I suggested is along the lines of what Bassin_bug and Geo mentioned. I have read a number of studies (peer reviewed journals, not something a paster suggested) that brought up those topics indicating negative benifits of casinos. If I have time later I'll try and dig a few up for you.

I've been to Keenland a few times for the horse races. Been to a few casinos too. Entertainment for a few hours, and thats about it. If folks want to gamble, have at it. I have no issues with that. Its the negative influences that are associated with casinos that outweigh any of the positives.

I don't have access to the same records as you? I find that hard to beleive since every single arresst made in these United States (of which I am assuming Alabama is still a member of) is public record. I know from everything I have seen this spike in crime when casinos are built simply doesn't exist. There was not suddenly a spike in crime because they let southern Indiana have some casinos.

Not real sure I understand the drivel at the end of your post, but okay!

    Re: A serious question

I work about 10 miles from the casino in French LIck. I remember when it was being voted on, how much money and jobs it was going to bring in, blah blah. Also heard from those who opposed how much crime and stuff it would bring. Just from personal observation it really did neither. The kids in the school corporation get their books paid for, but there are still plenty of unpaved roads in Orange County. There are some new businesses but on the flip side every piece of land that is not a business is for sale. The town got a Denny's, and soon a Mcdonald's. But there still ain't much worth doing in French Lick these days......

I don't understand Prowler, either it helped or it didn't. You state that it didn't help, and then follow it up with kids getting free text books and new business moving into town. That sounds like improvement to me. Also, the casino wasn't there to employ anyone before, and now it is there and people have to work there. Also, McDonalds and Denny's hire people as well. I would say that created some jobs didn't it? Maybe they are not high paying jobs, but it still means people in the work force, which would seem like an improvement.

Yeah I wasn't being real clear there Tim. I guess what I was trying to say was that the people that were for the casino hyped it up as the great savior and those who were opposed hyped it as the coming of Satan. It has helped, but in my opinion not to the extent it was advertised. There are still plenty of people in French Lick and surrounding areas that don't have jobs, but a lot of that isn't the casinos fault. People have to want to work. Overall though bottom line is it has helped more than it hurt. I just remember all the hype surrounding the vote and French Lick and Orange County seem just as poor now as it did then.

If only you could see the County through the County Highway Department Superintendent's eyes.......that County's roads have come a LONG way since that casino opened up. You can't judge a County's quality of roads by how many miles have been paved........that's like judging a house by the color of it's paint.

These come to mind as a result of the casino coming into town:
West Baden renovation - 8th Wonder of the World
    Big Splash Indoor Water Park
    West Baden Indoor Go-Carts
Indiana Railway Museum and Scenic Railroad Trips (I think the City or County owns this now)
