    Fluorocarbon Question

Guys, How often do you change your fluorocarbon line? Does it tend to last longer than mono, or about the same? I have not used it enough to know for sure.

    Thanks.

    Re: Fluorocarbon Question

for me it is based on usage and the type of reel. but it is exactly the same frequency i would change mono.
spinning reels right now are about every 4-5 days on the water
casting reels are about every ten days on the water.

on the spinning reels i dont change the entire spool, only the top 60 yds or so, splice with blood knot.

on casting reels i chan ge the whole spool

im not saying the line NEEDS to be changed, i just want it changed for my peace of mind .

if you havent used the reel for a couple of weeks and the line seems like it has excessive memory you can stretch the line by placing the rod in some kind of staionary device (rod holder on the boat etc) and pull the line out to a tree or something you can hook to 25 yds or so away and reel until there is a slight bow in the rod leave it this way for 30 minutes before you go fishing and it will help straighten the line (you can do this mono as well)
    best of luck to you

    Re: Fluorocarbon Question

Honestly for the price the Fluoro is these days I very seldom respool my Fluoro. The only time I respool is when my line starts to get low from re-tying my line. I never have problems with line breaking so for all the hype of you need to respool everytime you go out.....I'm not buying it. All together I will respool about 2-3 times per season. When I used Mono back in the day I would respool a lot more often just because of line memory and breakage.

    Re: Fluorocarbon Question

I don't re-spool my Flourocarbon very often at all. When I do, I Backfill the spool with 20-30lb mono so to not use as much Flourocarbon to fill the spool. I will say if you store your reels in a non-climate controlled environment it will hurt your line. My garage is not climate controlled and can get pretty warm in the summer when the door is closed. I take all my reels off my rods and keep them in the house in between trips. Keeps the line cooler and does not give as much memory to the line.

    Re: Fluorocarbon Question

I start with fresh in March and change again in July or August. Mono I tended to change about every other month. The newer flouro tends to be resistant to abrasion more than the stuff of 3-4 years ago.
