    NASCAR at Daytona

I am not a NASCAR fan but my son loves to watch. The Nationwide 300 was yesterday. They could change the name to Wreckfest 300, because that is what it was. Dannica Patrick sat on the pole, then lap 47 she is telling her crew chief at how scary it is because she can't see when she is drafting with someone. 2 laps later her own teammate is behind her drafting when he bumps her and into the wall she goes. There is a monster wreck with 18 laps to go involving a number of cars. On the last corner if the last lap the leaders crash and the guy that was in 11th place going into the corner avoided the 10 cars crashing in front of him to win the race. These restrictor plate races are going to get somebody killed. Way to many cars running within inches of each other is a recipe for disaster. Today is the Daytona 500 and guaranteed there will be several massive wrecks and hopefully nobody will get hurt

    Re: NASCAR at Daytona

I used to be a big NASCAR fan and still follow it some.

That being said, I've NEVER liked the races at Daytona and Talladega. The restrictor plate racing has always been a joke, but now that they race in pairs it's just ridiculous.

Plus, they "race" (I don't event think it's really racing) in a big pack and then all wreck together multiple times especially in the last 20 laps.

I think the drivers should get together and refuse to race at those tracks.

They have introduced fuel injection this year, and did away with the package that kept them in 2 car drafts. Unfortunately technology was way ahead of man's ability to handle it. An unrestricted stock car can muster speeds of over 210+ mph...Some of those guys thinks they could crank it out even faster...

    Racing is racing...I love it...

Isn't part of racing putting it to the EDGE and driving through it.

By deliberately restricting the vehicles, they have inherently made things more dangerous.

I think when drivers push the limit and get KILLED doing it, less would push the limit. I don't like the rules, and no longer like Nascar.

Kind of what is also happening with open car racing. I remember a few years ago when Penske used BENZ motors, and NO ONE could catch him. Instead of figuring out how to compete, other race teams whined and cried.

Same thing about them crying about Patrick's race. SHE is lighter, her car is lighter, she drives FASTER......instead of whining about it, figure out HOW to beat her.

    Later,

    Geo

NASCAR is much safer than what it was in the old days......you look at Danica's wreck in the Gatorade race, and then Miguel Paludo's wreck in the truck series race, there is no doubt in my mind that 20 years ago both of those drivers would have died.

NASCAR was established on the principal that all cars are made to be as even as possible, that it's the driver and his skills more so than the car itself used to get to victory lane. Having them all run so close together is a testiment to this. It takes a high level of skill to drive these cars, and keep them inches apart. It's an amazing thing to watch.

If the cars were all spread out, never touching, no cautions, no rubbing, no hot tempers, etc. there would be no one to watch it.

No doubt it is a safer sport today than years ago. Dale Sr.'s death was probably the biggest impact on making the cars, equipment and cushion walls all safer. Agreed that both wrecks plus Gordon's wreck in the Shootout Race would have resulted in injury or worse. Just saying when a guy is in 11th place going into the last turn of the last lap comes out the winner, this is too much. I think the cars being safer is the reason all the rules have been changed to keep the pack together.

I liked the result! He ran a clean race, stayed out of trouble, and capitalized on some other guys' mistakes. It's no different than winning on a good pit strategy or fuel mileage.

Monday at Daytona Racing was Wrecking. Tuesday at Daytona Racing is Wrecking. As long as you can throw a cast net over 25 cars at any one time doing 190mph, this is what will happen. So much wrecking at Daytona even the Jet Driers are not safe.
