You won't know the difference until you've actually used the higher dollar sunglasses. The better quality lenses reduce eye strain and fatigue. I always thought that was BS and a way for companies to make more money on their glasses, but after wearing some Costas for a season, I can definitely tell a difference. You're not paying additional for the frames or the name, it's the lenses themselves that are so expensive....this is confirmed by glasses that have interchangeable lenses, you go to buy some different lenses and the price kind of shocks you.

As for the ability to see underwater, matching the lens color to the conditions plays a large role in this.

For a decent pair around $50, you might want to look at maybe some Bolle polarized sunglasses from Amazon.

I've got a few buddies that are dedicated Bolle fans. I'm a Costa Del Mar fan, but those are a little more than what you're looking to spend.

I've got some WileyX's. They are good glasses, well made, tough and scratch resistant...

However, for me they are too dark. My eyes are pretty light sensitive so I wear em even on overcast days. Wiley's are just too dark for me unless it's bright out.

I like the cheapies just fine.

I ended up getting another pair of Berkley's. But this pair has the magnifiers on the bottom part of the lens. Perfect for these set of eyes that can't see the "fine print" clear anymore.
