Speaking of Bloomquist and Dirt

Reading in another thread about dirt track racing. Asinine was the term I believe. Well as asinine is some of this chit that some are swimming in this board sounds I do have to make a comment....

Which do I want to be in....a car on dirt at 125mph or one on pavement at 128...not much difference. The difference is the one's with thier hands on the wheels..

I witnessed Bloomquist and several others race numerous times over the yrs...All on the smaller tracks, not Elduro(?)..watched Bloomquist be leading during the 1st 50 of a 100 lapper. During the 50 lap break he's come in get tires, start dead last and then dominate the rest of the field. Drughead well yes he was or is. Fact he could drive and those that love dirt cars watch him. Some of the earlier racers lare 70's, mid 80's in and around Eastern, Ky were the best in the business. A number few went on the the big dance and Nascar teams.

I personally have been on 3 pit crews for dirt cars. 201 Speedway, ThunderRidge, Isom, Perry County, Clay City and the old track in Salyersville...

It was a hoot and a lot of hard work. One of these teams were silently sponsered by the Hardees team.

And this time of the year is when we usually fired the cars up and started stirring up dust...

Just curious, since you have followed my health ordeal over the past several years, and you read the other post with me and Mr. Keyboard Commando, have I embelished what I have been thru?

Don't get me wrong, I love dirt track racing just as much as the next guy. I grew up going to Paducah International Raceway and Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway. Terry English, Randy Sellars, Tim Brown, and Gary Keeling have long been favorites of mine. I used to love it when the Hav-A-Tampa series came to town and the local guys would give the big names a run for their money. Any time the World of Outlaws sprints came to town was a real treat - I remember seeing Dave Blaney have a firey wreck going end over end one night at Ky Lake, only to see him in a Sprint Cup car a few weeks later...shoot he would have gotten a Daytona 500 win this year if that fire would have eat up the track more.

I think the coolest dirt race I saw was in DuQuoin Speedway where the ARCA cars ran on dirt - Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Ken Schrader were all in that race.

Another that comes to mind was watching Austin Dillon get his first late model win at Charlotte on it's dirt track. He beat out Clint Bowyer for the win. I went to the pits afterward and got to meet Richard Childress that night. Austin made a few Nationwide races the following year, and won the truck series championship last year.

In the other thread I said you can't try to compare dirt and asphalt racing...two totally different animals. For someone to be watching the Daytona 500 and being upset that it isn't like a dirt track race is just asinine. Heck even comparing Sprint Cup at Bristol to dirt is just as silly. Two totally different animals, with totally different factors that affect the outcome. I love watching a late model pack the left front through the corners, just as much as I love watching a Sprint Cup car riding around the track within inches of the other guy knowing that the smallest slipup can cause dramatic results. Both are truly amazing to watch.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. About 10 years ago my cousin invited me to rabbit hunt with him and Fats Coffey. Didn't take long to give up on the rabbits and we ended up back at the truck listening to Fats tell stories. My ribs will never be the same! Great fellow and tremendous story teller. Had the privilege last summer to also see him inducted into the Dirt Track Hall of Fame. He is certainly worthy. Wished I had seen more races back in the good ol days. At least theres a cool video.

I'd love to see racing get back to the basics. There is so much money and cheating it it now, that it really makes it tough to enjoy. I think the RULES make it very hard for average teams to compete, especially if they "figure" something out that can give them an upper hand.

I'd love to see a couple bubba's put a car on the track at Daytona, or the Brickyard and smoke the established fools..........BUT hey, that is just me..

Cheating has always been a part of it. Cheating is only cheating if you get caught...just ask Chad Knaus...there's a reason he has all of those championship titles on his resume; if you aren't pushing the envelope and trying to get every advantage possible, you're at the back of the pack.

1, Loved the music in that video.
2. Loved the video seeing the old cars and the guys out there. Cool.
3. Loved those races. Went with my X to local races cuz he was a driver. Just loved those dirt tracks. Great fun and exciting.
