Did you notice in the article the guy fishing lost one of these lures when he hooked into a fish that he lost. I am assuming he lost bait and fish from the article. That would be a prize fish if you catch the fish and one of those bait.

I slung one off this past Friday at Guntersville. Best advice I can give is get 80 lb. braid, I had on 30 lb. Pro Line and it snapped off on the cast. If the water would have been a little warmer I would have been swimming for it.

Re: Has anyone hung up and lost an A-rig?

I am not a sponsor on this board so i will not mention my name but i make custom tackle for a living. I bought 7 rigs and tested them all well. I took notes on every one. So i made 300 and took them to the indy boat show and sold all 300. the one common factor that i did not like about every rig was these heavy duty swivels they used. i cannot tell you how many times a customer took the rigs back to the booth they previosly boight one at after i told them the concept of using a swivel rated at 35lbs could save them $30. i had one guy say "that will never hold up to more than one fish". come on. If you catch another fish its on another swivel. These heavy duty swivels are not needed. Only if you like losing the baits which im sure those manufacturers are banking on it.
If you are using 65lb braid the swivels will pop before the line. You lose a dollar.

Just stay clear of the real heavy wire hooks like J-Wills and you should be able to bend the hook enough to break it free. I've found that popping it works better than a straight pull although I have had to hook a few to the boat cleat. I like the heads from Backwaters pretty well. That being said I have lost three rigs so far this year. Very hurtful.

Re: Has anyone hung up and lost an A-rig?

Like I said, I've lost several. But that's the price of learning the nuances I guess. I've lost fish on straightened hooks trying the lightwire hooks. I've lost fish on cheaper models where the wire straightened. I've also lost fish having the swivel pull out straight.
With that said, I'll use only good rigs with good hooks and good swivels for tournaments only. I'm going to 80lb braid. And on practice days I'll use light wire hooks.
Really, I hate the dang things but if you are going to be competititve in tournaments you gotta throw it. Fish sure eat it.

Get freightrained by a big smallie and you'll see why guys aren't using the really light swivels....Saw it with my own two eyes that the light wire swivels will straighten out under the pressure of a big bass...I mainly fish in a lake with musky and can only imagine what would happen if one got ahold of an a rig with lighter swivels.....I use the heavy swivels and will straighten my j will swimbait hooks before it breaks using 80lb power pro
