Its funny you mentioned a rental because I rented one last month and had to show an ID so you got me. Actually you didnt because I dont mind showing mine, just saying I dont show one to vote. You must look like you are not trustworthy to have to show an ID everywhere you go.
I also have no problem with being asked for an ID before voting. Not sure what the problem is.
