I'm going to be putting a new trolling motor on my boat, too so I recently researched the subject. From what I have read, you measure from the area where the motor will be mounted to the waterline and add 20" to 22".
I would say 42 at a minimum. You can adjust most of them. I would call a dealer and see what they recommend.
What boat do you have? A jon or like a bass tracker?
Always better to have too much than not enough, extra length comes in handy when fishing the main lake on really windy days. I have a 45" and most times it's not enough.
