Had quite a rise this past weekend while bass fishing on Barkley when I pulled up what I thought was a really nice white bass on a rattle trap. But when I swung it in the boat I realized it wasn't a white -- it was a yellow bass! The biggest yellow I had ever caught was probably no bigger than 10" and this thing was 16" long and 2+ lbs on my hand scale and I knew the state record was just over a pound. So I was thinking I was going to get my name on the big list with this freak of nature and starting calling around to find a certiifed scale. Called marinas and even got hold of Paul Rister's number but no one was home on Sunday. Found a certifed scale after lunch plus some gullable and willing witnesses as this brute weighed in at 2 lbs 6 ozs -- I was big list bound for sure as it more than doubled the record. Heck this thing might even be world record class! Left a message for Paul who returned my call first thing Monday morning and after some photos and text messages we determined that what I had was a yellow / white hybrid. I had never heard of such a thing but being that they are so similar I can see where an "accident" can happen in the wild. So beware out there if you catch a gargantuan yellow bass and think you are destined to be on the big list. A loose white bass or yellow with poor eye sight may have ruined your chances. I guess I will have to aim for those jumbo perch on KY (record .48 lbs)...
