i pretty much hate it
why?!?!
its like casting a basketball
Like Art said. Its a lure that can work great when the time is right, like workin some schooling fish. I havent fished one, just based on what Ive read so I cant say much, just doesnt look like my style.
Me too, until I finally fished it enough to see it's potential. Bass will flat out hammer it and almost rip the rod out of your hands...that is motivation enough for me to fish it.
On top of that, it works on hybrids and stripers too....a week ago I had a 15 lb+ striper hit and nearly took my rod with him when he jumped 3 ft in the air! He got free, but man that was awesome to see! I can't wait to get in on some more of that action!
i have mixed feelings about it personally,When a 5 wire alabama rig with jigheads and exposed hooks i have seen a lot of damage done to fish from getting 3-4 hooks in the fish .But at the same time it does catch fish and usually qaulity fish.
Myself i shy away from the name brand albama rigs and the 5 wire versions and they are to high and the 5 wires will flat out wear you out fishing them from weight.I use a 3wire a rig with 1/8-3/16 weights and it is more manageable in weight and also use swim bait hooks and rig it texas rig. This prevents from getting hung up and losing them .As anyone who has used the a rig knows those things get hung up on everything. So i chose to go texas rig and take a chance on missing a fish rather than take a chance on losing my rig.
Also you can make your own for dirt cheap, many tackle shops online sell them unpainted and you bend your wires and add swivels dirt cheap.I bought 10 a rigs for around 20-25 bucks .
There are ethics involved in fishing this rig in my opinion. It kills alot of fish, ALOT...
Read the post prior to mine, alot of guys feel this way. It is not a knock and I don't blame people for fsihing it, but alot of fish get gullet hooked on this rig and hooks in their eyes and gills..
Ask around you'll hear some others speaking of this as well. Also this is ''ONE'' of tthe reasons BASS tourney's elected to not allow it...
if you look around or talk to people who fish the rig you will hear many story's of how many hooks they had in the fish,Usually one in the mouth, back, side, fins,or even eye. Here is a few pics i have found of how fish are getting hooked.Granted it may not happen every time but it does happen and the damage to fish to me is not worth it.
Granted i do use the rig on occasion but i use a 3 wire with texas rigged baits,as if i do catch a fish i usually only get him one time with a hook and that is the bait he hit.So it is safer IMO this way,Plus it reduces your chances of hanging the bait up on bottom structure. Also if you do catch more than one fish on the rig ,For the love of Jesus don't just grab the lure and hold it up to show the fish off like the guy in this second pic.Look at how much strain and stress he is putting on the fish in the middle .
I do not know how to post pictures on this forum yet but here is the link
