JMO. First I figure if the person entered my home, he "may" be interested in me as well as my property, or may harm me just to cover what he has taken.
I start with the basic assumption that honest people of moral intent don't break in to my home.
If he's in the garage and no further, have a nice day and I'll talk to the insurance company.
If the person enters my residence, and my wife is home, I'll shoot first and ask questions later. I'm not going to become a victim because I looked out for a person breaking in more than I did for my wife, or for me for that matter. I'm not issuing a warning that gives the bad guy the opportunity to know my location and decide how to attack me.
If the person enters my home and the wife is no where close or in harms way, I'll give him one chance to retreat, and if that is not heeded immediately, I'll assume the worst and bust a cap.
To me, bottom line, some of society has become too permissive and tolerant of law breakers. Set a clear standard. Enter a property outside the residence and its trepass. Enter the residence, and it's assumed your intent is no longer porperty.
To be clear, you can shoot a guy in the knee cap and not kill him. Mission accomplished. If the guy can walk on one knee, than that one goes too.
