Question about amish

Some teacher groups can and do opt out of social security, as they can purchase their own retirement plan, that can be better than Social Security. Ky Don I work in a food stamp/gov asstance office, and we have and do have Amish clients, on both food and medical benifits, a lot of them do not have social security #s, they do not have birth certs, the majority do not pay income tax, mostly the only ones that do pay income taxes have business that are very profitable, or visual. I am no way against there way of life, but if you are goona live here and use stuff im paying for with my tax dollars then you should have to honor the SAME RULES AS I HAVE TOO ADHERE TO, period. Just because your religion is different doesnt mean I have to put my life at risk cause you dont want to put a orange triangle on the back of a black buggy, that you cant see in the dark. How many of them have to die before they relize that they need to be seen. Later.

The only reason they would not pay federal or state income tax is that they do not make enough money to owe a tax bill. The are thousands and thousands that don't pay income tax because of income leval. There are thousands and thousands that don't pay income tax because they have accounting attorneys that know the ropes.

As far as the orange triangles go I agree they need them on their buggies. They may accept the risk of accident/death of riding these on the roads at night... but not me. I do not want to be the one that accidentally hits one. I do not want to be the one that kills or hurts someone accidentally. Even if you did this this accidentally I am sure you would question yourself and have a very hard time dealing with such an accident.

I guess the silve reflectors was the best compromise they could come up with. Maybe not perfect, but better that them putting nothing on the buggies.

Not sure I know the difference between Amish and menonite groups...but there are some in these groups that drive. Everytime I've seen them driving a gas powered vehicle they were piled into a large full size window van...I've seen them at gas and food marts just off the interstate....I've also seen them piling out of these vans 9 or 10 at a time at neighborhood yard sales.

Glad they made 68/80 between BG and Hopkinsville 4 lanes. It used to be pretty dangerous for the black buggies. Back when it was a 2 lane highway I almost wrecked my truck/boat one rainy pre-dawn morning on the way to Barkley. Topped a hill and there was a buggy, an oncoming car from the other direction. Standing on the brakes I was about to put my rig in the ditch on the right when the buggy moved over enough for me to squeeze by. My tournament partner said it looked like there were at least 2 people in the buggy. Thanks to God, and whoever invented anti-lock brakes.

The sad part of that story is that even reflectors on the buggies will not help when you run up on one of them cresting a hill or rounding a curve. Their speed is just a little more than parked and then you come ove a hill at 55 mph or even 45 mph and they are parked in the middle of the road, extremely dangerous.

I am affraid it is going to take many deadly incidents before this danger is addressed.

How do they pay income taxes if they do not have a social security number?some sects refuse to become enmuerated as that would be against their religion also, some might get a #, a lot do not have birth certs that prove citizenship, and before the illegal talk starts, the illegals do not have ss#, unless they buy a fake one, some hispanics have work auth only ss cards, maybe the amish get this one. My point is that they do not accept our government as there ''LEADER" or controlling enity, so they are exempt from our laws. sometime the income is given to the church and then divided between the families of that sect/group etc, that is where the church exemption comes in, this practice might not be used by all, but some do. They do pay prop taxes, and sales taxes. and they have tax #s at their veggie stands. Like said before, they are a good hard working people and I think honest, but if me and Geo said we didnt want to pay taxes or have brake lights on our cars as that makes us look gaudy and god wouldnt love us, they would throw us deep in jail. just saying all should be treated the same, they makes laws that only affect certain groups, therfore discrimiting the others. My issue has to do with a group........ANY GROUP being exempt from our tax code.

Our military protects their ASS just like they protect my ASS.
Our infrastructure is used by them.
Kosair Childrens Hospital supports them.
U of L Med Center.....

I'm just saying. If you can GUARANTEE that they don't and will NEVER require gubment services, then I can see not paying into the gubment till.

Kydon, I work in social services, i have had them come into office to apply for benifits and most did not have ss#s. due to their religion. The only reason they were applying was that they needed medical due to illnesses that they could not treat or complicated pregnacys, there has been a few that, came in for food stamps, they were the ones that were leaving their way of life for the outside world, a friend of mine is an " outcast" as he left the community for the outside world, he got his ss# after he left, he didnt have one before. One thing to remember is that the majority of their children are born in the home with a "midwife" assisting with the birth, not a lot of records kept, try to get a birth cert for an amish, they dont exist, only church records and hh records. And also why would they want a ss# if they are not paying into system, it would be only for tax reasons.They dont want to participate in our government or system so why get #, its just a tracking # for our gov to keep tabs on us that have #.
