Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?

A couple of years ago me and a buddy caught six 3-5lb catfish out of the Ohio river. We caught a mixed bag of channel and blue. I told him no way was I going to eat them but that I'd help him clean them. We cleaned these fish and they were cleaner looking than some lake fish I've caught. The meat was literally sugar white, so I ate some of them and they were TASTY to say the least.

I was surprised how clean the meat was and I attribute much of that to the river being cleaner than ever. The Ohio river is probably cleaner now days than it's been in the last 100 plus years folks. Nothing wrong with eating fish out of there in moderation...certainly wouldn't eat it every month.

Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?

Everyone has some good points. I wonder how many of us read the labels of the foods we eat? I wonder how many drink alcohol in excess or in moderation over a period of years. I wonder how many smoke or chew tobacco. Really all of these things can lead to a premature death, even eating too much fish that are contaminated with mercury.
But, other than eating totally organic in some form (Or quit eating altogether) there is no way to prevent some toxins or non-natural products from entering the body. I've seen the effects of these habits working in health care and they can cause premature death (not living to the normal life expectancy). Personally, I don't do any of the above (used to but no more) but I would probably eat a few of those crappie but only in the recomended servings that have been studied to not be harmful by the KDFW. I've even eaten some of the stripers that have the parasite (Sorry stripernut, I hope you don't puke!)
    Later,
    Tim

Just out of curiosity, can anybody name one person that has died from eating fish out of the Ohio River?
I'll be keeping an eye out for any posts. This could be a while! Lol!

A better question would be can you name one fish that's totally safe to eat every day for the rest of your life that swims in the Ohio River? Or another question is how much PCB's have been eaten and stored in your fat cells over your life time of eating Ohio River Fish.

How about name one interstate that's totally safe to drive everyday for the rest of your life? Life is too short worrying about eating fish from the river. Sorry, but I'm not a "doom & gloom" person. We're all going to die from something. Hopefully, I won't die from a contaminated fish in the river...I can just picture the Big Guy upstairs doing that to me after typing this post! Lol!

My philosophy is "Moderation in all things". That being said I do have a problem when it comes to moderation with bourbon.

I eat sauger from the Ohio river. How often? A fish fry maybe 3 times a year with myself consuming 2 fillets. I'm sure my exposure to other carcinogens greatly out weighs these few fish fillets I eat.

I would rather eat something I myself catch than any fish from a market that I have absolutely no knowledge of it's source or processing.

We all will die. It's only been relatively recent in our culture that cause of death has to be determined.

If I'm shot when I'm 70 years old by a jealous husband, is my cause of death lead poisoning or stupidity on my part?

    I agree.

By informing the fishing commuity they can make up their own minds as to what to eat or not. At least they now know what's going on in the water.

I think that Peter had a good post about ORSANCO. They test the water and fish for pollution and the State's issue fish consumption advisories.

But you are right that we can't worry too much about this. We are all going to die someday. Might as well try to enjoy our time on this earth and be happy.
