I have 2 HDS-7 on my boat with structure scan, and think they are great. I bought the last one a couple weeks ago, it was a used unit. got it from a guy in Texas off the BBC boards classifieds. they have some good deals on there from time to time. the trick to getting a good buy, is check the classifieds 2 or 3 times a day. and when a deal is posted. you have to contact the guy right away or it will already be sold. check them out, you may find just what you need.
I have been looking at the Humminbird 788ci HD DI combo. It has down imaging/2D Sonar and GPS for $800. Pretty good deal compared to the Lowrance since you don't have to buy the LSS-1 Module.
Why don't you check out this side imaging unit. It will do both side and down imaging. I ordered the exact same one from here and love it, just wish I got to use it more. If you have any questions let me know and I can tell you my experiences with mine.

Check out Universal Mania.Com they have some great prices.
This place ^^^. I got my 788CI HD DI for like $600 or $650 I think. You need a SD card too and update the software IMMEADIATELY. It took a little while, but it finally started working perfectly after a few software upgrades. Also, make sure you have a good connection to power. Run new cables if possible. It needs a good 12v source to work right.
I bought this one last week. I bought an uneeded extra power cable and the total came to $733.
Haven't got it out on the water yet though. My main disappointment so far is the Humminbird Pre-Loaded Contour XD maps. They only have them for very small unpopular lakes in KY and the contour lines are at 10 foot depths. Pretty well useless. You will want the Navionics chip if you plan to use it for the maps.
I think they have a DI unit without maps too though. For the front that would be ideal.
Look at the unit I posted the link for. It is the same size screen with everything the down imaging unit has plus it's SIDE IMAGING for $799.00.
