i snuck out of the house between rain showers , ran straight out to the mouth of wolfe/caney and threw the gizz on the rocks on the right side going towards lilly. made it about 50 yds and had 2 keepers one on the gizz and another on a sassy shad swimbait. the gizz was so deep in the gullet i couldnt get it out without tearing it up so i will do surgery in the morning.

so much for rainy nights not producing lol.....when/if i ever figure these things out it wont be fun anymore

p.s. there was another boat without lights on that bank that i didnt see until i started the gas motor to leave....then they flashed their lights. if you are on the board here my aplogies, like i said i didnt see you.

First off I would like to thank you to Stripernut for helping me out about where to fish up by the dam area. We fishing 5/10 night thru the morning of 5/13. We had 4 keepers stripers and 1 keeper walleye. I had a very large striper on for about 30 seconds until he straighten my hook and about burned up my drag. I even had on new Gamakatsu treble hooks..

I did catch a 3ft gar, sat. night. It eat a hole through my net.

We had a good time and we caught MANY 20" and 22" stripers so here in a couple of years, it should be really good. We also fishing the main lake points with good success.

You all are getting me pumped up! Heading down this weekend for my now annual nite bite trip. Having kids will do that. Really hoping for a good showing. Since you all are offering some great information I was wondering how far back in the creeks you all are willing to go for nite bite fishing. We have always stayed mostly on the main lake and in the mouths of the creeks but typically never venture to far back in the creeks. On the larger creeks would you ever go 2/3/4 miles back? Thanks for all the great info and looking forward to any other reports. Sounds like fun! BG

I haven't been able to join the fun. So take this for what it's worth.

Long A Bomber in Black and Chrome. Casts farther than a Sliver. When it hits the water, wait 3-4 seconds, then take up the slack. Now give one long rip, a short pause then two short rips, and repeat. JMO, this particular lure has produced for me when fished with a Redfin, and Zora Spook. I throw either of those topwaters and retrieve. If no strike, I follow next cast with the Long A Bomber. I think they follow the topwater, and refuse it, then his the next thing that swims by below the surface. And I think the short rips, followed by a pause cause them to chase, wait, then hit when they think its getting away.

Im just now getting into fishing for striper with artificial bait as well. I picked up a sliver a while back in silver w/ black back. Is this the trusty color pattern? I noticed someone mention it above, and Im looking at picking up some of the gizz4's. One of the problems I have is buying every color under the sun, but then only ever fishing one or two.

Guys, first of all, thanks so much for the great advice. I really mean it! I am a newby to the striper game. I am usually pulling bait or u-rigs during the daytime. So many things to consider. My boat was about 35 feet out perpendicular and we would cast like old bass fishing techniques. Many times within 2-6 ft from the bank the lures would hit. Scared of getting hung up! There were 2-3 problems right off the bat. I was using a black light with white green and red burning as well. I have looked up the gizz4 and assume it is made by smacktackle. The sliver, not a clue. I did keep one of the shad last night to get a good look at size shape and color. As far as the two boats out that only caught one. I was worried when we got there that an obvious skilled striper hunter was parked on the ramp watching his boat tied up at the dock of the dam and not fishing. I am making this judgement by the tackle and how nice the boat was. Again, Thanks for the info.

Fishing 35 ft out means your bait was maybe in the zone for two or three seconds. You can't be afraid of getting hung up or hooking the bank. It's just part of it. I really don't know how the stripers would feel about a black light but my guess is they wouldn't like it much. Yes, it's a blind cast. Just practice everything in the daylight before it gets dark. Even with bad casts, I rarely get hung up and even then it's pretty easy to get off. You really can't go wrong with the Gizz 4. The issue with those baits are durability in my opinion. Last time out I had a fish take the entire rear hook and eye completely out of the bait. I had another fish break off two of the three hooks on a treble. They are expensive but invest in several. Get the one with the slight purple on the sides. Others will work but that is the go to color.

The 01 or 20 both work well but the 01 is the go to. This is a sinking bait and can be worked the same as the Gizz 4 only a touch deeper.

For grins, is anybody throwing live bait suspended under a slip bobber set for about 3 feet deep? We do that for fun, and it does produce. Add one of those miniature chemlights/glowsticks to the top of the slip bobber, and you can get some really great visuals as a Striper moves in, gets the bait nervous, then finally takes it and starts to swim off and dive with it.

And you maximize dwell time in the strike zone of 2-5 feet of the bank.

If things get slow, try it. Threadfin shad work fine as bait, shiners last longer on the hook, but don't get hit as readily as the threadfin shad do.

been doin it that way for years the lovely missus stripernut refuses to cast at night so i throw 20 or so alewives in the tank for her. she sits in the back of the boat and points the rod tip towards the bank with 25-30 feet of line out and a freeline 2 feet below the floater. like you she puts one of the glowstick bite indicators inside the white/flo orange styrofoam floater , it lights up crazy, it also acts as a great indicator of where the fish is when the fight is on, and helps guide the fish to the net when it gets to the boat.

big gizzards will catch a good flathead evry now and then too.

she has tried it 2 different nights this year with no luck though.....too many live shad !!! needle in a haystack

HurricaneBob, Stripernut, Duayne, and all the others. Great information. I am just like every other guy that now has pounds and pounds of tackle. Looks like I am headed for long A's, Gizz4's and Slivers. I am in Lexington and can only find the Slivers. I have called Smacktackle and I can order directly off the website. I have to little by little. That way mama does not see the big hit all at once. What is your guys thinking for the Gizz4. They make a shallow and deep diver. Seems like the color is either BlackPearl or Purple Pearl. I will have to buy 6-7 just in case. Thats how I roll Like I tell my buddy, they are expensive, but you can't believe how high they get on the water when their working I am going to read back to the other post on your advice on how to work the Gizz4's.
