Were you fishing the live bait the way you mentioned above?
Thanks,
No, they really need to be on the bank pretty good for that to work, these fish are in the 20-30ft range, its downrods from now until oct ....at night that is
Thanks. My wife is like yours....doesn't like casting all night.
Did you use lights to pull up bait and then fish or just locate em and drop to them?
Time of the night this usually works?
I think the Stripers hit lures because they get tired of chasing the shad that are too fast or too hard to catch.
Same reason I used to date ugly women.
Made it out Friday and Saturday night. Lots of ale wive activity from midnight on. The bite was from 2-5 area eastern. We had a lot of strikes. I am embarrassed to tell you how many (like 4 friday and 15 saturday) and we did not get one striper in the boat. We did land a 3lb largemouth but that is it. We were fishing coves off the main lake in the Jamestown wolf creek area. We had the hits on the larger floating red fin reeled with a slow retrieve. We also threw slivers, gizz 4 and a big jointed shallow running bomber with no success. It was a lot of fun but frustrating. It seemed like they were messing with us by smacking the lure around. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to change the approach when you are not hooking up? We sort of had this problem last year but we did land fish. In years past we have never had this problem they pretty much hook themselves. I was wondering if the smaller sized stripers vs the larger red fin was the difference? In years past almost every striper we caught was always a keeper and now it is almost a coin toss.
Thanks for all your alls help! BG
If I were a guessing man, I would say most of your hits may have been walleyes.
creek mite b rite.we got 5 walleyes sat nite and lots of half harted hits, all the walleyes were on redfins and hit VERY LIGHTLY.only got 3 short strips.
I agree with Creek also. That is what Walleye do...If it was stripers wanting the bait, you would not have had that problem.
As Andrew says.....''Frickin Walleye''
Yep, Walleye. You might be able to pick them up by laying the pole down (just leave the bait in the water) and throwing a bucktail or sluggo type bait right beside it in deeper water. Sometimes they'll come back and hit a second bait when they won't re-strike the top water.
Oh, I wouldn't do this on the first short strike. If it's a few stripers, that top water plug might get hit again. Another option is to have someone else throw a bucktail. I like to have a few different baits working if there are other people in the boat anyway. If one bait is killing them, then sure, have everyone switch to that. But many times they may take a different bait when they short strike or don't strike another.
Thanks. I would have loved to have gotten into a mess of walleye. They are delicious! In all my years fishing there I have only caught 2 walleye. I have always been so focused on striper that I never took the time to figure out how to catch those Wallys. If anyone wants to give the 101 I would like to read about it. Thanks for all your help!
