If you hear anything let me know. I've not been there in a while. I need to get out there and get a few fish in the live well or at least feel the "thump" a few times.

It's been very quiet in here lately.

It's the same old pit. A lot of boats and good fishing. It's been a little strange lately at least for me. Bass are all over the place as expected from really shallow to hanging around deeper structure. The bite is either really good or dead for me this year. Most of my big fish have been around submerged grass in 4' or less of water. I have usually not done very well with top water there. This year that seems to be a whole different story. Spooks and frogs are killing them around grass.

    Re: blue grass

Wth the mild winter there is a lot of algae floating on the top around the edge of the lake. The fishing spot near the bank at Bluegrass's South Parking lot is so full of algae that you can't fish it without fouling the hook with that green slimy algae.

It's been cool the last week until just the past few days. It's finally warming back up above 75 deg F in the afternoon. In fact it was over 80 deg F the other day.

We had a rain shower this afternoon and that may help cool the water's surface back down a few deg.

I was looking at some photos that I too of boats at Bluegrass. I noticed this one boat that's there a lot and it's was really stained below the water line. It was clear my picture as the boat was just pulled out of the water and was sitting on the trailer still next to the launch ramp. That water is really dirty guys. Anyone else notice how colored the water is?

I remember swimming in some old strip pits up by Chandler, IN and the water in those pits was almost crystal clear. I remember swimming in Linton's pits years ago and they were pretty clear as well. I use to scuba dive in the old T pit and there you could see for hundreds of feet all around you except near the bottom. At the bottom the water changed to an orange color. I don't know how deep that orange water went as I didn't like going into that murkey water. I stayed above the bottom where the water was crystal clear. I could see schools of sunfish swimming around 15 ft deep. The clear water was about 20 to 30 ft deep with the darker colored orange water below that. Those old pits could have been 60 ft deep or more for all I knew. For some reason they filled in that old pit. Not sure if they mine reclaimation rules made them fill it in or what. Perhaps they had another reason for filling it it. I'm sure it cost the mine a lot of money to bring in big equipment to fill in a pit that was perhaps 60 ft deep or more and hundrends of yards long. I remember it was very close to Squaw Creek road. We would park our cars on the road and carry out scuba tanks to the edge of the pit and then put them on and go diving.

Iron is one of the metals ion's that's present in old Strip Pits where coal was dug out of the ground.

In Bluegrass, Loon and Otter Pit's there is a lot of old coal dust (Coal Muck) that covers the bottom in places. I know this because every time I pull my anchor or bouy marker weights up off the bottom they are covered in a black coal goo. Plus I spoke with a Chemist who reminded me that the Iron in the water can change the pH of the water. It raised the PH I guess. I read that the pH of the water in these pits is alkaline and around 8.x something.

But the Orange stuff at the bottom of the old "T" pit was different that what I've seen in other strip pits. And the water was almost like it was sterile as it was very clear in the top layers. More clear that any other old strip pits that I've dove in in the past. The only waters that were as clear or clearer was an old rock quarry that didn't have any mud on the bottom. It was all hard rock and averaged about 40 ft deep. That's the pit over at Dawson Springs, KY that's now a diving quarry called Cellurian Springs or something to that effect. I dove in that rock quarry back in the 1970's with some of my scuba diving friends that were on the Fire Dept Scuba Rescue Squad with me. We drove over there to check out the rock quarry one time and found the place in a horrible condiditon. It was closed off to traffic as somone had bulldozed dirt across the roadway. We were in a four wheel drive truck at the time and went around or over the berm to get into the place. We eventually got chased out by the sheriff later after our dive and didn't go back there anymore. We didn't know it was closed. There were broken glass bottles strewn all over the place making walking barefoot difficult and dangerous. But the waters in the Rock Quarry were crystal clear and you could see down to the bottom from the surface easily. Visibility was over 100 ft that day and it was only 40 ft deep. I saw huge bass swimming around this old flooded building. And I saw huge bluegills that were spawning on the old roadway. These fish were as big as a man's hand and their nests were huge. They were in 15 ft of water and guarding eggs. As far as seeing fish on a dive this was one of my best fresh water dives in my memory. I've dove in the Ocean a few times and that's pretty cool. You can see sharks and baracudas in the Key's and there the water in the Ocean is crystal clear with visibility around 300 ft in all directions. I've still got some pictures that I took with an instamatic camera and a water proof housing for that camera that I rented for the day. They are not the best pictures but the subject matter was some of the best I have captured. Colors seem to fade out when you get down below 40 ft. even in crystal clear waters. At least on the film I used to take those pictures. In the upper parts of the reef the film captures the colors better.

I miss diving. It's fun once you get into the water but it's hard work getting all the gear in place and getting into the water. Especially during the hot summer months.

Night diving was cool. I did a couple of night dives with underwater lights and that was interesting. I enjoy fishing and have been fishing with my dad ever since I can remember. So naturally when I took up scuba diving as a teenager I always looked at the water from a fishermen's view point. Actually it was from the Fish's view point.

The trouble is that you can only stay underwater for so long. And even though I could swim a mile every day it was different when wearing a scuba tank and fins. You use different muscles in your legs when scuba diving and unless you do it every day you get tired quickly. I use to dream of having an underwater sled to use to get around the lake so that I could see more stuff.

My heart won't let me do much diving anymore. I had planned on updating some diving gear and doing some diving in some local pits but that was before I had my last heart attack. So my fish attractors are going to have to say put unless I can find some one else to do that job for me.

Good Luck. I've not been over there much lately. I've been hanging around the house due to the rain and winds.

It's going to be hot if the sun's out. Not so bad when the sun is behind a cloud. But it's pretty hot when the sun's shinning now. I sat outside on the back deck for a few minutes trying to get some sun and it was HOT out there in the direct sun.

You guys ever fish with live crayfish? I'm thinking about trying to catch some crayfish out of a lake or stream and use them for bait someday. I have the crayfish trap but I need a place to put it overnight where it won't get stolen. Bluegrass is too busy to put a trap out overnight as it probably would not be there when I came back to check it. When I was a teenager I use to go back into the woods behind my parents house and sein the creek. I'd bring home all kinds of minnow, small bluegills and crayfish. Even use to catch tadpols.
