there is one thing for sure....cumberland is NOT dale hollow, and its not laurel. dont expect it to be and you wont be disappointed.

but if you are determined to go after a big brown one on the big c you are going to have to work for it.....alot of work.

since the first week of february there have been 18 smallmouth over 5lbs caught in my boat (by different people , wish i would have caught all of them lol) 3 of those were just over 7 and 1 was just under 8. that sounds good until you consider thats roughly 80 days of fishing.....sometimes twice a day. alot of work.....fun, fun work

    Ouch

One of the main factors that biologists out west have determined that in some lakes the stripers take over and in others do not, is that the smallies eat the naturally reproducing striper fry. This is a salt/brackish/freshwater non-native species that has been put into a man-made lake. So if it is completely artificial all fisherman meat eaters and no kill fisherman alike should have a say.

"Normal" or "Summer" pool in the cumberland drainage should be a thing of the past, take out the dams.

    Re: Cumberland smallmouth fishing

First of all, I want to say that I have no interest in ruffling anyone's feathers, so if what I say here is disagreeable to you, I'm sorry but I'm just trying to get the facts out. In the fifteen years I've fished Cumberland, all I've ever fished for are the black bass species. In that time, I've caught a handful of stripers accidentally and only cleaned two. One was about 12 pounds and I'll never forget cutting its belly open and seeing what was in there - 23 shad and either a largemouth or a spot that was about 10" long.

I remember it well because I had heard the locals down there arguing about whether or not stripers ate bass and here I had definitive proof. I didn't have to wonder who to believe anymore. Now, this doesn't answer the question of whether or not they eat smallies, but I just cannot imagine a reason that they would eat largemouths/spots and not smallies. Make of it what you will.

I should of made it plain that I was'nt trying to stir the pot just asking a question to a noteable stripper fisherman. That would be my policy as well!
