Usage Tax!! Arghhhh!!!!

The usage tax is something that most people either do not know about or choose to ignore. There is a line on the KY income tax return (it's been there for many years) for individuals to report it, but it is mostly ignored by individual taxpayers and tax preparers alike. For individuals, it applies on purchases from out of state retailers and even things like many magazine subscriptions. It can apply to even more things for businesses, doctors, and lawyers. From what I hear they usually ignore it also. Oh by the way, many states have signed agreements with other states where they share or trade information on paticularly large purchases where tax was not charged.

My dad had a 19' Lowe Jon-Boat...which had a piece o'crap trailer with it..he was paying taxes on it, no big deal. About 5 or 6 years ago he decided the boat needed a nice trailer so he purchased a new trailer....then when tax time rolled around he started recieving two tax bills, one for the boat and one for the trailer. I paid his taxes for him..he was pissed about paying taxes on the trailer, kept telling me not to pay the SOB's, etc...lol

Dad passed away last year...I sold the boat. However the guy who purchased the boat did NOT register the trailer when he registered the boat. This guy lives in another county here in Kentucky...earlier this year I recieved a tax due notice for the trailer. Went to my local tax office...they gave me a waiver or something, told me to make up a name (any name) of the person I sold it to, etc...it didn't matter. Long story short, now there's at least one new boat trailer I know of that is not having taxes paid on it. They won't come back on me either, already made sure of that.

The older I get the less I want....those waders are looking better all the time.
