    Carp-O-licious!!!

Launched at Walnut Creek today and headed up towards Brown's Ford to try and find a bank out of the wind! Worked the west side, but it's tough to find a flat with no "green stuff".... Found some fish that were up on the rocks and facing the bank. These guys were waiting for stuff to fall in the water and then they would turn and feed around. Finally connected with a nice fish that turned and ate the fly!

Kept working that side of the lake and I would find fish up in the weeds, but they were spooky, spooky and you can't get your fly where it needs to be seen!! Tough finding spots open to place a fly

Went back and worked the same bank, but never connected. Found a couple of fish mudding out in front of the grass and connected for the 2nd fish of the day!!!

Big ole tail that does work!

Worked hard for these 2 fish, but it was a great day out there and I'll take it!

Thanks for the comments!! Appreciate it!

Grass Carp are going to be a little tricky vs. the Common Carp that I'm targeting around here. From what I've read they are more inclined to go after something that looks like vegetation vs. something that mimics a bug. There's an article in the current Florida Sportsman Magazine about Grass Carp and you may be able to find it on their website as well. Also, you can google "Grass Carp on the fly" and get some good tips/info on going after this fish.

So far this year I'm using a fly called "Barry's Spork" in the rust color. Last year I was throwing a rust "Backstabber" fly and both of these have been very productive patterns on these dudes.... I've used Rainy's Carp Teaser and that's a good pattern as well. Brown color has worked for me. For Common Carp anything that looks similar to a crawfish seems to be the "go to" fly....

I've never had the chance to fish for Asian Carp so I can't give you intel on those bad boys.... I think you just drive around and shoot them when they jump out of the water! 12ga fly with #8's should work on those!!! hahaha

I'm fishing Barren River Lake and all I've seen are "common" Carp. I don't think Grass or Asian Carp are present in that Lake. Here's a link to Wikipedia which has some good info and pics on the different species, but you can google images for those to get a better look at the different features on each fish.

A few weekends ago I did see a rather large "gold fish" and I'm sure it was a Koi. It was a very distinct orange and I guess someone let it go or thought it was dead and flushed it down the toilet... ... either way it was not feeding and was just swimming around very happy up in the weeds... cool sight though....
