For you mechanic guys here...60 hp mercury problem

Long story short ( I hope). I have 1995 pro 17 with a 60 hp mercury. Last fall it began to spit a little but was not a continuous problem. This spring I've only been able to get out twice and so far both times full throttle out of gear no problem with engine. Full throttle in gear I get about 20% power (if that) and can only get to about 3600 rpms.

So far I have rebuilt the diaphragms in the fuel pump, blown out the fuel filter, changed all of the hoses internally for fuel on the engine changed out spark plugs and have good compression 100+ in all three cylinders. I checked the gas tank and have ethanol parts from the hoses in the tank and have now bypassed my main fuel tank and tried running of a small portable tank with clean fuel.

went to the river after all of that...no change.

Tonight, ran motor with clean gas and carb cleaner and sprayed out carbs with cleaner but have not been back to test under load yet.

I am a little leery of rebuilding the carbs since I dont consider myself much of a mechanic, but does any one else have any suggestions?

Do you have a needle valve adjustment on your carbs? If so, have you tried adjusting them. You can do a google search on doing the adjustments for your specific motor.

My dad does boat motor work on the side, he is very reasonable and does a great job several people on this form go to him. His name is Len Wathen he lives in Bardstown, KY he also has a Dyno if the motor needs to be ran under a load. Years ago, I had the EXACT boat, EXACT motor.......EXACT YEAR.............and the EXACT problem.

I ended up having to rebuild carbs. I'm not good at that......I wish I was, because it cost me 700 bucks to have it done, but afterwards, the boat ran like a top.

While I was good about winterizing it, I really didn't know about pulling the fuel line and running the carbs dry, or fogging the motor. BOTH of those issues is what gummed up and damaged the carbs.

You might also want to check and see if the carbs are time together correctly. Just make sure that the butterflies are opening at the same time. I had that issue once and it affected low end but I guess if it was bad enough it could affect the top end.

Is there a forum somewhere that members share information about this sort of thing as I also have an issue with a mercury
35 outboard that seems to flood out one cylinder when I first start it and seems to only run on one cylinder for 10 minutes or so until I guess it dries the plug out then it catches and runs fine.. I changed the plugs but it never seemed to help.

Fuel quality is terrible now. You need to treat each tank full. You have to do it at the end of the year, or this is what happens when it sets for to long. This is true for mowers, trimmers, saws etc. It will turn the pick up lines in tanks to dripping rubber.

Joy O Joy!! I was able to get the motor running by running a mixture of carb cleaner and gas through it as well as spraying carb cleaner into carbs as engine was running. Only been out once so will still need a couple of more runs to make sure.


Remove gas tank from tracker this morning (what a mess) and hopefully will be able to get to work on the leaks.

I prob had some other stuff done too, but the lions share of the stuff was the carbs........About 7 years or so ago.
