Heading down next week to St George Island. I mainly fish in the surf and in the bay with my inflatable kayak. I am looking for any pointers for where or how to fish the bay for trout, reds or flounder. I am also interested in the far east end of the island for surf fishing. Can you get all the way out now without a 4 wheel drive? Most of the time I surf fish in front of the house we are staying in everyday and go the bay with my son 4 or 5 times a week. What do you guys think is the best tide to fish for the surf and for the bay? I have seen several people post about using fish bites and I have never used them. What is your favorite kind and color?
Thanks
For Reds, I'd go up behind Little St George. They are usually on those flats. A gold spoon, Spook or artificle crap fished on the edges of the pockets usually does well if you can't site fish them. The pockets I refer to are open areas where you see sand instead of vegitation. You'll know it when you see it. You may get all kinds of fish working those flats, including some huge sharks. I'm not sure I'd cast to them from any kayak, much less an inflatable one.![]()
Half way down little St George and out maybe 500-600 yards, there is a long oyster bed. I can't put you right on top of it but I have drifted the area. If you get bites, you are on it, if you don't you may or may not be! LOL Use a popping cork with a gulp alive shrimp under it on a jig head. Survivors can set you up with what you need. The best place I know of for flouder is RIGHT next to the rip rap on the cause ways and the cut. But I don't know much about them this time of year.
